hey guys,

I was out driving my 280zx tonight for the first time since gearbox swap, I was traveling at 110km/h according to 2xgps and I was only on 2650rpm with my calculations it means that the top speed is 290km/h at 7000rpm is this right? or am I wrong? diff im unsure of and ratios in gbox have me stuffed as it use to do 110 at 2950rpm.

About 210 will be flat out for a standard car. Aerodynamics will kill top speed as the car doesn't have the power to push through the air.

Yep, theoretical top speed isn't the same as actually achievable top speed.

It is potentially even more complicated, you need to consider the characteritics of the engine / where peak power, torque is achieved in the rev range, etc - you may gear your car for a higher top speed in 5th but it is entirely feasible that you may actually achieve a lower top speed in 5th by doing so.

My little 1600 was geared for 245kph on my last trip to Bathurst, actual top speed down conrod straight was 181kph. 5th gear was useless, I could achieve a higher top speed in 4th

my engine is far from stranded, and has massive torque from 3000 rpm to 6500rpm ( goto love turbo L28 ), I have no dought it will do 250km/h as I have had my 260z do 240km/h with worse aero and a lot less powerful engine, im fairly sure that It would never do 290km/h as im not that stupid to try, I was just shocked that it could potentially go so fast, its quite scary really.

I still think that is optimistic, the air stops you like a brick. I'd like to see a road 260 get to an actual 240km/h not indicated. My 260 would do an indicated off the clock quite easily, but actual speed was about 200, and fecking scary.

My old 240 was good for a genuine 215 at Lakeside, 220 at QR on clubman circuit and a maximum top speed of 230km/h down conrod at a speed weekend at Bathurst in the late '90's with 200rwhp and a 4.1 diff. I don't care what anybody says, unless you have a shit load more power and proper aero, not ebay ricer aero you won't get a zed doing much over 250 down a very long mineshaft.

I had a mild worked and camey L28 it had about 160rwhp, that speed was a gps was about 235km/h at 6500 rpm in 5th, it was not on a track so I had a lot of time to build up the speed. as for aero it was a custom front spoiler with a extended lip for more down force, I do know what your saying though before the lip at 160km/h it was quite floaty and there would be no way I could hit that speed. my 280zx has a lot more power and stacks more torque then my 260z did but the down force would be what will stop my 280zx as it is stock as a rock it did however handle fine at 160-180km/h at winton but im not stupid enough to try to go any faster in it without new front spoiler and rear spoiler and plenty of room like a runway

would be interesting to find out just how fast it would go flat out, on a runway, track or salt plains, do not know that even a turbo 280zx motor would achieve 250+kph, it certainly has the aero when fixed up but don't believe it has the torque to push the car

Anything is possible with a tail wind and a very very very long straight road, sloping downhill slightly. ;)

well if a 280zx with a rb26dett can do it I don't see why a L28et running close to the same power can not do it, 250km/h I think would be quite achievable, 300km/h on the other hand im quite sure it wouldn't, is there any full speed trails in aus

but would it generate enough torque to achieve max RPM in 5th gear? and push the car through the air resistance?

would need to address the aero factor and the ratios of diff, final gear, wheel size and capacity of engine to achive max RPM and torque at speed.

Think the downward slope is the best option.

280 Z-cars decent into middle-aged spread, the 280ZX was far less appealing than the car it replaced. Longer, wider, heavier and uglier, the new 2.8-litre car was very much a boulevardier rather than a full-blooded sports car. Equipment levels were lavish, and power steering, all-round disc brakes and semi-trailing arm rear suspension were further refinements that cast the Z-car very much in the luxury car sector...

but all those factors do not relate to top end speed, still trying to figure what mine will be but it would gallop past any standard 240-260z and give the extremely modified a good run for their money.

rear ratios, horses and torque are what get you there.
