Hi All

I am doing a RB30DET conversion on mine at the moment.

So far its taken me about 3 yrs to get to the stage where we are putting it together.

Anyway, decided to go for broke. I have just bought some top of the range forged pistons and have bored the block 40 thou. all new bearings and alike. The head is a RB25DET (twin cam variable valve timing Head) and we had it cleaned and checked.

I am running a GTR Front mount and tripple core radiator.

I will be running a Haltech Engine management system once running.

The turbo I will be running is a Hybrid. We have used the factory Turbo and modded it quite a bit to be good for about 500hp.

I am running a brand new RB25 gearbox with a Nismo Lightened fly and Nismo clutch.

The car it self is another story. Check out my web page if you wanna know more.

I've seen the site looks great' date=' was just woundering if it was any more upto date.

would the RB30 be a better move than a vg30?[/quote']

Hi I'm a newbie, what car does a RB30 come from or is it just stroked to 3L? and what car does a VG30 come from?

thanks,

William.

Hi William, your lesson for today Nissan RB30 and VG30 engines :)

RB30 is a inline 6 and comes from a VL commodore and the Aussie made R31 Skyline. They are Single cam heads. Thats why people swap the twin cam head of an RB25 onto them. Most are natrurally aspirated (NA) but they were also available as a Single turbo in the VL commodore.

The VG30 is a V6 and comes from the Z31 and Z32 300zx, (and also from the maxima, but in front wheel drive configuration). The Z31 VG is a Single cam per head engine, while the Z32 VG is a twin cam per head engine. Both had NA version but the Z31 VG was also available as a single turbo engine, while the Z32 VG was available as a twin turbo.

Lesson over, now I'm off to the garage to play with my VG30ET.

well i originaly typed this post to disagree with this combo but i see the point after getting more details about the setup from a family member that had one. aperrently its not as expensive for reasonable power increase if not going to extreem levels.

as i said my cousin HAD a worked rb30det with rb26 head.

straight from horses mouth:

made 570hp @rw on 19psi boost on premium unleaded did 10sec @140mph in a modified VL calais.

in slightly more tuned form made 784hp @rw on 32psi on c16 and times 9.30 @148mph

still on board he had 150hp nitros shot but it was never turned on the race track or the dyno just didnt seem reliable enough to take the risk.

last comment DOESNT LAST! cracked engine block several times but he was pushing almost 800hp out of a how he said not bad from a family sedan engine.

though still not as cheap as rb25 or rb26 straight conversion but for 500hp should be good setup that will last a bit if all done right.

hey man, sounds like a mad ride, i am currently deciding what engine to put in my '77 260Z 2+2.

i was looking at an RB25DET which i will most likely do but i also hav an old VL out the back and i was wondering if i can throw the RB30 block/bottom end on it and use all the rest of the RB25 gear (head, turbo etc)

does anyone know if it is possible to throw the 3.0L bottom end on the RB25DET without to many probs and wheather it is worth it?

i'd say find a thread on it at www.skylinesaustralia.com, as i'm sure there would b info there. i have a mate that did it in a vl and he said he should of just gone with an rb26 for what ended up being similar money, not sure if he had much work done on bits, mayb it was the time spent doing it, as he went rb25 for a bit then put the rb30 block on it

do rb26's have individual throttle bodies and other things which would end up costing heaps more than the intial cost of one add to an rb25 head?

with either rb engine the way i see it is get it in there and running, as both would have more than enough power as an upgrade over a stock L series, then in a few yrs time when its not enough get an rb30 block, but if u know you want psycho power then may as well do it in the first place

yeh, i think im just guna go with the stock rb25det coz by the time i put it in with custom intercooler and exhaust it will be pushing 200kw at the fly anyway and in a car that ways just over 1100kg dats heaps 2 start off wiv especially coz bein a basically stock engine it will still be reliable.

and lata i can just throw a chip, wind up boost & etc & go up to 250+ on stock internals plus its a non turbo rb30 bottom end i got so if i run boost through it i will prolly end up with pistons evrywhere in 6 months

I have an awsome pdf file on my computer that describes what is needed and how to do it. If anyone wants it send me your email address as it is too big to post on this forum. I would have linked it, but the guy got rid of his link from his signature on Skylines oz.

I appreciate the nice comments guys.

I went down the track of a RB25DET in the first place as I got hold of a front cut from an R33 Skyline for a good price.

I considered many engine options with my car but really wanted to stay Nissan to keep it closer to the original setup design wise and in the same family.

I would have gone the RB26DETT GTR engine but they were almost twice the price at the time and that was for just a standard setup, with 2 turbo's and the GTR name plate the price to do any work to it was just way to much for what I wanted to spend on a Datsun.

As it is this car will probably cost me $50K but after many years of racing my WRX STI and beating cars 5 - 10 times the price on track days, I thought, what car would be more embarrassing for a Porsche or Ferrari driver to get beaten by. Why not a Datsun.

They will look at it when I turn up and say, thats a nice old Datsun. Then they won't give it a second thought, until I blow them away down the straight and out break them into a corner and out handle them everywhere.

So that is my mission, to fly the flag for the mighty Datsun 240Z. I want to single handedly increase the exposure for the might Zed here in Australia. When I look at the classifieds and see Datsun 1200 utes selling for $20K and Zeds struggling to sell for $15K it makes me cry.

I think when doing up any car you need to consider what you want to acheive. I want a reliable track car that will run all day long with no problems and I can drive it home again. I want it to look classy and not cheap. I want to use quality parts, which will cost a bit more, but will be worth it.

A modded 260Z recently sold for $43,000 here in Sydney so am I over capitalising, maybe not.

This year I will be doing my best to get it on the road and get it finished.

hey sco_aus id be up for a look at that file if you could send it to me please? ive got an r31 and the 260z + rb30et and a rb25de im juggling which engine for which car. it may just convince me one way or another :? ! chris

yeh ive been tossing the idea around for a while now, and i think the rb30et (384kw @5500) mite have to go in the skyline, as it bolts straight in computer and all eccept a lil fuel pump circuit mod and the cars all ready regoed so its a weekend job (fingers crossed)!

the rb25 na was dynoed at (187kw@6700) so itd stir the zed up quiet alright i recon especially with the ems aftermarket pc ive got sitting in the shed ! using the twin cam head on the 30, from what ive heard doesnt make that much difference as far as hp goes its more efficient though(appearently) so ill probably keep both engines intact and maybe later down the track ill swap engines over visa versa ! this stuff is like lego so you never know! lol ! i think in the long run the rb30 has gota go in the zed but ! chris....................ahhh shit i dont know!

No worries, I have been looking for it for ages since the guy who had it in his sig got rid of it, but someone else has it now. I considered it, but it is a lot of money since i would be doing it with forged internals, plus the car would be off the road for a long time. But I will stick to 250rwkw for now :D its hard to take. :D
