marty Posted August 8, 2007 Posted August 8, 2007 How much would it cost to change the engine, gearbox and LSD in a 260z and what engine, gearbox and LSD would be best to use? Also if anyone knows of any 240z or 260z for sale could they let me Know. Thanks Martin Quote
George Posted August 8, 2007 Posted August 8, 2007 hey martin, welcome to the forums. your question is pretty broad since you have no preference. you can pretty much put anything in a 260. maybe if you narrow it down to what engine then we can advise you better. also, what will you be using the car for? daily driver, circuit, drags etc? marty Posted August 8, 2007 Author Posted August 8, 2007 I would be using it for track. I would consider any engine that will improve performance, but have seen a quad cam VG30 single T3/4 turbo and a gearbox from a 300zx and would consider it as a starting point. Thanks Martin Quote
620Z Posted August 8, 2007 Posted August 8, 2007 Marty budget has a lot to do with what you want to put in your car. Do you want to spend 2, 5 10 or 20K on the mods. then we can give you a better idea on what to do. Bear in mind $1,500- will get you an R200 LSDiff. that will hold any power plant. Do you want it mainly for track or still nice and drivable on the road? Quote

Thanks Martin not from a 300zx, the single turbo's were an import of the various nissans that were released ie leopard cima gloria. do you want a straight or bent (V6) motor, both will fit, less room around the V but no dramas still (well beside the usuall dramas of doing the engine swap.) id say go an rb20det, cheap, plentiful, easy upgrades etc etc and is still a straight 6 for a similar formula to the original car. nato Quote
marty Posted August 9, 2007 Author Posted August 9, 2007 I would like to spend about $8k on the engine, box and diff. Mainly for track use but able to get rego. I don't care if its straight or a V, which ever would give me the best power to weight ratio, reliable easy to maintain and price. If all was equal i would go straight 6. What kind of power does the average rb20det put out? Also if its not to hard a question how hard it it to stiffen the chassis? Thanks Martin Quote
620Z Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 Given the sort of cash you are talking I would probably recommend going a straight 2.8L 6 cyl with triple webbers. Will give you descent power and not to bad on the road. Should be able to run a pretty standard box behind it. But at least you will have some cash after the diff upgrade to spend $1,500- on the triples and 5K on the block, tuning etc. Of course if there is cash over then you can always work on the handling and brakes for the track. That will be another 5-10K depending on what lelvel you want to got to. As for stiffening the chassis. Well you can get the usual strut braces that willonly make minor handling differences. Or move to a half or full cage. A full cage done properly will cost you 3-4K. etc etc. Quote
marty Posted August 9, 2007 Author Posted August 9, 2007 A friend of mine is thinking about selling his 260z and was wondering what the LOWEST price he should give it up for. It has: VG30 DET with rebuilt T3/4 turbo EMS computer 5 speed nissan from 300zx (jap) R200 LSD diff 3.9 1/2 cage 3 inch exhaust lge aluminium radiator(4 row 600*400) and intercooler(600*350*85mm) This was all completed in 5/2001 and travelled 16000km since Has 300zx TT front rotors with landcruiser 4 spot calipers front and skyline rear discs and calipers i PS this is all fully engineered Suspension tokino adjustable shocks Whiteline heavy duty adjustable sway bars Simmons 16 inch by 7 in rims The interior needs replacing, including the dash. It needs a new exhaust starting from the manifold to the end of the car. Paint work needs sum attention Minor rust Needs a new alternator/generator or whateva it has. Just wondering what you guys think it is worth. Thanks Martin Quote
620Z Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 That car sounds pretty good. you might even get it for around the 9K you were talking about. He has probably spent close to 20+ on it. But that's cars for you. Sounds like a lot of the hard work is done. Those other things that still need doing are only minor. It's just a question of the motors reliability and your knowledge of a turbo engine to maintenance and up keep. Quote

At the moment I have disabled attachments since we are moving servers and I don't want to have to keep track of all the new images that get uploaded. Until then just upload to photobucket or similar and place a link. Sorry for the inconvenience but I'm trying to reduce our recent downtimes. Quote
