Hey guys,

Selling my 260z gearbox that I purchased as a 'rebuilt' unit about a year ago.

The only issue I have with the box is that it whines, which makes it unsuitable for my daily. I believe it would be perfect for a race car or for someone who does not care about such things. The whine is not THAT loud, but it has gotten on my nerves. Maybe I'm too precious.

Apart from the whine the box performs admirably and feels quite strong. It changes gears easily and all the synchros are in good condition. I want to stress that the only reason I have for selling is that I want a box that makes no noise.

I bought it for $600 8,000 kms ago, I haven't ever raced the car with the box just driven every other day with it. If you are interested and live in Brisbane I can show you the box as is currently installed on my car. I am looking for $200 for it. Buyer to pay for shipping costs. Box will be out of the car by late April, can't send it until then.

Questions welcome

Steve

I'm very interested Steve, although I'll need to pay you to ship it to Melbourne. Is it a 260z 2 seater box? Either way my old 280zx box is a bit tired, leaks oil and probably could use a rebuild anyway.

I don't mind it whining :).

I am not sure if it is a 2 seater box, I didn't realize they were different at the time I bought it. Is there any way I can check? No problem if you want to have it shipped I'm happy to help any way I can.

Easy way to check, if the filler plug is on the right, opposite side of where the exhaust usually runs next to it, it's a 260 box. Even better if you can put it in 1st gear, rotate the output once and count the number of roatations of the input shaft. If it turns almost 3 times (2.9) def a 260Z gearbox. Sometimes may have a 260Z housing, but different internals.

Hey guys

Shaun and I had a look at the box today, we weren't able to test the ratio to any degree of accuracy (it's still in the car).

The filler plug is on the left hand side (passenger side) which contrary to what I was told when I purchased it, may make it a 280 box? Perhaps the bell housing was switched when the previous owner had it rebuilt.

Cheers,

Haha Greg, we borrowed that 'Cement Aerator' we saw at Kennards last weekend, but it's alright we cleaned it thoroughly :S

But anyway, with the gearboxes. Is it possible we have the info around the wrong way? I have a box that we definitely got out of a 280zx and the filler plug is on the right hand side (drivers side). Steve has a box he was told has a 260z box and it on the left hand side. I know it's possible that any of these boxes could have been swapped at any time, but where are we getting this filler plug info from? I have seen it mentioned a few times on this site but maybe we are just copying what someone else has posted? Just a thought...

In regards to the whine the gearbox makes, went for a quick drive in it today and it's not that bad. Not trying to say that there isn't a whine, just saying that it is bearable. But anyway I don't think anyone of this really matters for a $200 gearbox haha. Good luck with the sale :)

Only real way to tell if it was from a 260Z is to count the first gear ratio; 2.9:1 for a 260Z and 3.2:1 for a 280ZX gearbox. I was told about that filler plug thing from Rob/Warren at Z Factory quite a few years ago. Housings can be changed but first gear ratio's are specific to their model. If you still have the original 3.7 rear diff and first seems real quick and short, it has to be a 280ZX gearbox.

Well I've never really felt that i had to shift too early but I'm really not an expert on that sort of thing. I think that for how much I am selling it for it's not worth the effort Id have to go to to find out the ratio.

I've bought it as a 260 box and the thingy is on the correct side, as far as we can tell for a 260 box.

Here are some pictures I took when the box arrived ages ago.

Note in the top pic that there is a piece the PO cut out of the bell housing for converting it to use with a ford. My mechanic put a plate over this section and it's hardly noticeable. That plate is an adapter to use with a ford engine I believe.

Regarding the position of the oil filler I just had a realisation. I have been reading through my project thread and at the time I got the gearbox specialist to swap the selector end of the box with the part off a 280zx box because it wasn't selecting gears properly. This means that the oil filler is indeed in the same position as it is on a 280zx box because that part of the gearbox has been taken from a 280zx. I've still got the 280zx box at home with the 260 selector end on it (I had the specialist swap them over) so I'll have a look and see what side it was originally on.
