Hi Guys, as the post says I NEED HELP! :P  I've got the motor in and almost everything hooked up but I can't work out the coil.  I have been advised to have ignition power go to the ballast resistor and from there to the + on the coil and then ground to - on the coil but I can't find where to take ground from the loom to the(points) Dizzy (if in fact that's how it goes?)

Regardless if I have this hooked up right, shouldn't I still be able to crank the motor without the coil hooked up?  I've come so far and I wanted to have it at least turning over this weekend....if anyone can help it would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Rev.

Assuming points dizzy, there should be a single male spade terminal (may be different on zeds) somewhere on the dizzy which you hook a single wire up to from the - of the coil.  It may be on the underside of the dizzy even, sometimes they put them there for some silly reason...

There is no 'loom' as such to a points dizzy, usually its just a single wire (often cable tied to the high tension lead!) between coil and dizzy, which doesn't attach to anything else on the car.

So you put the picture up AFTER I post!

One of the no idea wires will be for the tacho, the other is likely +12v supplied only during cranking (to give a hotter spark on startup and avoid all the power being sucked out of the other ignition feed by the starter) after which this wire goes dead and the coil runs through the ballast resistor.

Looks like there is a single wire in some plastic sleeving that takes off just below the clip on the body, and disappears somewhere under the high tension lead there - I'd say that is the wire you need to hook up to the dizzy, but to be sure grab the end of it and do a check with the multimeter that it actually goes back to the terminal you have on the coil negative.

And incidentally, yes you can crank the motor over with no coil, but why not go for broke and start it :D

O.K well it's all hooked up I think and when I turn the key there is the roar.....of silence!  I'm getting nothing at the starter motor!  Now I'm worried that the solonoid on the starter is stuffed...there's power at the solonoid but nothing happening...any clues?

A quick test...

I assume your battery is at full crank amps..

With the ignition on, jump across the starter terminals with a screw driver, it should wind over and or start, or remove your starter and reinstall, sometimes the throw out will jam, Z starters are not the flashest in town once they are worn, get a High Torque..

Thanks for the advise...It did make a 'whirring' noise but didn't seem to engage the motor, I tried it again and only sparks this time...no noise! ???

Thanks Lurchos  ;D, I took the battery from my other Zed, still wouldn't go with the key but it cranked when I shorted it across - so I'm one step further but I can't work out why it won't go with the key?

Another quick test...

You have a good battery, it will crank when you bridge the starter with the screw driver.... splice into the ignition wires with a toggle or preferably a momentary switch and it should start.....

Dave, if you get a piece of wire from the bat + and touch the small black with yellow stripe wire on the solenoid (that wire comes from the ignition switch) and if the starter operates as normal, your igntion switch may be the culprit.

Thanks once again for all the help with this one.  We found that almost everything was wired up correctly but because it was an auto to manual conversion I hadn't bridged the two wires which stop the auto from starting in gear, obviously now being a manual these had to be bridged.  Also had fantastic help from Mayhem last night with the dizzy and it fired up and purred absolutely fantastic.

Fantastic!

Oh & make sure you tighten up the manifold bolts/nuts after it got hot & cooled down again...

That's a great one Rev.  Glad to hear that you got it going.  The story put a smile on my face, will have to tell the old man that one as he has done a auto to manual conversion in the past.  See if he can work it out ;)

I should add that to the how to.....
