  1. Again, thanks everyone for your interest and knowledge. I'm pretty certain it's stock. I'll take some pics of the engine/efi and post it up. The mechanic didn't clean the injectors. I'll put a smear of silicone on the crack and see if that works. I drove it again on the weekend to reassess and there is a bit of acceleration urge in the lower rpm and then upon reaching higher rpm, it just doesn't accelerate with any urge - it's almost (non turbo) diesel-like, if that makes sense ie once it hits about 4000 rpm, you can plant your foot flat and it doesn't react as though your foot's flat. I checked the plate and yes it was an auto. Can a standard diff/gearbox place fit this ratio off the shelf or would I need to order parts from a specialist? The speedo seems pretty spot on. Thank you HKSZ Thanks for your help gents. Kind regds
  2. Fantastic mate - that black tail light panel looks really sleek in black. With chrome, can I suggest Autosol and one of those drill attachments with a buffer on the end. They have all this in Supercheap. PS - your English is superb - no need to apologise.
  3. Thanks gents - much appreciated. I'm not sure as to ratio, nor am I sure how to tell. It sits on about 2600rpm at about 100km/h if that gives any indication. I'm sure my mechanic tuned it as that was one of the things on his to-do list - it got new plugs with the distributor. I did notice some tell tale cracking in the rubber hose between the manifold and air filter, but am not sure if this has cracked all the way through. Just remembered too I also noticed a very very minor and sporadic miss in first gear when under light acceleration (ie slow travel through a car park) I think I'll just need to source a mechanic familiar with Nissan/Datsun here in Brisbane to sort these issues out for me! Bloody old cars!! Thanks again guys
  4. Hi all, If anyone could assist with their knowledge I'd appreciate it. I've just had my car back from the mechanics, who have suggested a new cam grind be obtained due to fairly flat performance/acceleration. It's a 260z with an EFI 280Z engine and 5 speed manual. It has extractors and I'd say a 2.25" system. All else seems fairly stock, with a new scorcher electronic distributor having been fitted the other day. It makes a fair bit of noise from the muffler, but doesn't accelerate with any 'snap' or 'urge'. It just doesn't feel like a 6 cyclinder should! My mechanic seems to think it is lacking from about 3500rpm, but I think it's lacking across the entire rpm range - indeed, there's no danger of it even breaking traction in first gear. Or, I'm thinking I might just be a bit of an unrealistic prat given this is an old car and I'm used to big engined modern cars? A 25/65 cam has been suggested to liven it up a little. I've been quoted between $800-$1000 to supply and fit same (a new Tighe cam, not a regrind). Any thoughts or suggestions? Regds
  5. What great looking work - really like the sleek black look of your suspension. Seriously wish I had but 1% of the talent and patience most of you guys seems to have.
  6. Hi Pete, Your car is looking schmick mate! The wheels look great - I've got the same and never knew they could come up that good. Cheers
  7. Thanks again gents for all the help. Lurch, I'm told the gear teeth are fairly stripped and the componentry inside are shot too. Probably explains why it stopped firing (had to tow it to mechanics) and was hard to start before it stopped, and with fairly lacklustre acceleration (well, relatively poor compared to an ssv and m37!). Anyways, distributor's ordered and being put together and will arrive mid week. I've already committed with performance ignition and I'm not the type to resile. Thanks for the offers anyway Peter and d2k - much obliged? Cheers guys

Haha! Lurch, you're a modest man. You give me the impression too that you're genuinely passionate about your craft and care about your clients. It's a pity you're not in brisbane as we're looking for someone to restore our car. Your comments about the distributor are resonating with me given the dramas I had today in trying to source one (which I did with the help of several members). Regds

Strewth! That engine looks absolutely fabulous Lurch. I haven't been here long but I'm getting the impression you're the forum's engine guru. What a craftsman!
  10. Thank you Peter, you're a gentleman. It looks like we're able to source one through performance ignition services though so I won't need to take you up on your offer. Price at about $600 is a little breathtaking so I'm glad the wife's on board for the resto! Thank you all for your kind assistance. Regds
  11. Thank you kindly D2K. I see you're at the Gap - I'm in the Bayside (SE Brissy). If you'll bear with me I'll speak with my mechanic shortly, get him to send me some pics/part no, forward to you and check that I'm not wasting your time. Regards
  12. Thanks for all your help gents - much obliged. Gav, forgive my ignorance but I assume the "oil pump drive shaft spindle" referred to in the ebay links you provided is one in the same as the distributor drive shaft spindle, or the dizzy runs off it as well, or did I confuse things? I'm receiving a call from my mechanic shortly and will ask for the part number etc. Thanks Retro Z - I'll be in touch with these people as soon as I can. Again, thank you both for your knowledge.
  13. Thank you Gav - I suspect that's the culprit referred to. Regards
  14. Many thanks for your reply Gav. I don't have a photo sorry. I'm told that it's that helical gearing at the end of the distributor shaft that connects to the crankshaft and that these gears have stripped. The mechanic sent it to be repaired but was told it's not repairable and that a complete distributor would need to be purchased. I've been doing some enquiries to try and avoid ordering from the UK (14 day turnover apparently). Reagrds
  15. Hi all, Was wondering if anyone would be kind enough to assist. My car is with my mechanic and the distributor is shot (the gear part that mates to the cam has stripped). He's having a tough time tracking one down and reckons it may have to be ordered from the UK. I've tried google, ebay, repco, nissan etc. Does anyone have one for sale or can point me to where I could buy one? I've spoken with Ash from Moorabin Auto (a supplier listed in this forum) and no luck there. Thanks and regards
  16. Thank you Peter - very informative. Does anyone know if/where that complete mechanism you're showing (ie the one that bolts to the chassis, not the latch on the door) can be bought? Cheers
  17. Thanks for your interest Chris and PB260Z, Chris, oddly enough it was my wife who was the driving force behind the purchase! I'd never even realised these Datsuns existed til she showed me one several months ago for sale online. My wife was after a Volvo P1800, then changed her mind when she saw the Z's (good call!). I also really liked the look of the Z's as well so we agreed to get one to restore to our tastes. We're thinking pearl white exterior, dark tint and those 'wire style' BBS mag wheels in silver and 15" or 16" (not sure of the name). Interior wise, we're thinking seats retrimmed in charcoal/black leather with white stitching and a similar theme for the door trims and centre console. The dash, gauges and wheel are all perfect so won't be redone. I'll need to install air con as well. The car will need an entire rubber kit as they are perished and actually leaking from somewhere near the top of the DS and PS kick panels. Chrome trim is fantastic on the outside. Bumpers will need to be rechromed though. My mechanic has been battling with some electrical gremlins and has replaced some suspension bushes and a few minor underbody fastening issues with the gearbox (I had him cut down the foot long gear stick to a shorter length). It's got a 2.8 litre EFI engine with a 5 speed, which I just had mod-plated the other day (being a legal requirement here in QLD). Performance was just adequate, so I'm having him tune the engine to extract some more. PB, thanks - we got it with a RWC and rego, so a bonus there really. 2+2 was needed as I'll sometimes need to cart my son around. I'm 6'2" and have gone for a drive in the back seat which is surprisingly comfortable, notwithstanding the fumes and the very slight diff whine. It's just a fun car to drive and they look fantastic. I'll take some photos once I've got it back from the mechanics. Cheers
  18. Hi all, Just introducing myself as a new member. My wife and I just purchased a 1976 260Z 2+2 and will slowly be restoring it over time. It seems to be in good nick with just a couple of rust spots so far as can be divined by our mechanic - it's in with our mechanic for a check over, tuning, and so on, so fingers crossed there. In time, it will be repainted, rectifying whatever mechanical/suspension issues need attention, along with new wheels and so on. We plan for the whole interior to be re-trimmed except for the tidy boot area, unmarked dash and lovely wooden steering wheel (the wheel was wrapped in a genuine vinyl cover which I removed and will have listed for sale in the classified section shortly). Thanks for starting such a great forum as I've been reading it over the last few days - I've certainly obtained a wealth of information, hints, and tips, and will do what I can to share as well. Cheers XYZ
