  1. Thank you! I spent hours today looking for that exact information! Everyone says to use the search but sometimes simple stuff like this just doesn't seem to be written down anywhere. What offset and backspace should I be looking for then on stock springs without lowering it or rolling guards?
  2. You can smell the fuel and the previous owner and mechanic both confirmed that the problem is that it's running rich. I literally have no idea how to wind the jets back up or how to check the plugs but I'll read up on that and give it a shot. This is the first car I've owned a long, long time so I have a lot of learning to do.
  3. A cross post from my build thread -- I need some input A video walk through of my car showing the body, interior and most importantly, my engine issues. I've never worked on a Zed before and have fairly limited mechanical knowledge. Look at the condition of the car and speaking with the previous owner, I can't imagine that the carbies on it are worthless and I'm assuming that it all just needs a tune. Does anyone have any thoughts on what to do to stop it running so rich? Do I really need to switch to 240Z carbs?

  5. They are nice but I'm concerned about the size. I don't want to roll the fenders if at all possible and wont be installing flares. I can't find any pictures of a stock Zed on rims that large. Do you have any photos? DMed.
  6. I don't suppose anyone has a copy of the carb servicing manual here: http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=28028&p=329465&viewfull=1#post329465 Although I registered on that forum a while ago, I can't seem to download it.
  7. I don't want to be too restricted by the rego. I'm OK with paying a bit extra and then having the option of doing larger trips if I need to. Also, I did think about doing triples but it's not going to be a performance machine and I like the set and forget nature of the 240Z carbies. I also have read that they are definitely comparable in power on L28's to triples. It's disappointing that no one will even look at the flat tops for me. As far as I can tell, they are in perfect condition. No one, including the previous owner, has even attempted to tune them though. I'm doing some reading now and might have a crack at it myself this afternoon after work. Even a small improvement could be nice and might convince a pro that it's worth the effort. And yes, I won't be touching the interior aside from the stereo and the inevitable manual conversion (if that counts as touching the interior). It's in fantastic condition and it's very comfortable. It really looks and even smells like a new car. The previous owner spent over 32K (with receipts) on getting it to this point. Poor fella. The restoration was done pulling bits from two other cars and the remaining shells were also part of the payment. Much of the work was apparently done by the "260Z club president" in QLD, whoever that is. I'm assuming that they are on here? I just happened across the car on Gumtree and had it shipped down to Melbourne. None of the photos in the ad showed the true condition of the car so when I asked for more I was astounded. There will be plenty of pictures coming, I'm a professional photographer by trade (danielherbertson.com).
  8. Continuing my introduction thread - http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php/topic,11939 I picked up my red/orange 260Z from a bloke in QLD who unfortunately had a run of bad health just after he spent a significant amount of cash on restoring the car. This is the car I have been lusting over though for as long as I can remember so at least it's going to a good home. I have a cafe racer that I ride during the week so this will mostly be only used on the weekends. This is how the car currently looks: I has a L28 bored out to 3L. I couldn't be more happy with the condition of the body and interior. It's essentially flawless. I do have some things on my to do list though. [*]Switch to 240Z carbies -- The car is currently running extremely rich on the 260Z flat top carbies and I have no hope of getting a RWC in this condition. After talking with a couple of local Z experts, they have convinced me that I need to switch to 240Z carbies. I'm currently in the market if anyone is looking to sell. I need to do this as soon as possible [*]Switch to chrome mirrors -- The plastic mirrors don't do the car any justice at all. I've already ordered some mirrors that use the stock mounts from ebay. [*]Fix the locks -- Not happy with the hatch lock. [*]Switch to manual -- An auto doesn't do this car justice at all. Currently in the market for a manual transition. [*]Install larger wheels -- I know that the stock rims are highly sought after in America but I can't say that I'm a fan of small wheels. I like the looks of the 17" Simmons OM wheels as seen here: http://www.viczcar.com/member-rides/nigels-stunning-1973-datsun-240z or the 17" CCW Classics here: http://www.viczcar.com/member-rides/jared-cullops-retro-lime-green-240z [*]Install a stereo. -- I'll probably just make up a panel to fit over the tail light assembly and put some 6x9s in there. It currently has a non-working stock stereo. [*]Possibly fit an air dam. -- I like the look of some air dams but I want to see how the car looks with the new wheels before making a decision. I'm sure I'll have plenty of questions as I haven't owned a car in about 7 years so please bear with me!
  9. I ended up paying 16K. Really happy with that though as the PO spent 32K on it to get it to that point. Aside from the carb issues, I can't fault a single thing on the car. Thread continued in the projects section here: http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php/topic,11988

    240Z Carbs

It's an L28 motor but I'm specifically after the round top SU carbs. Thanks anyway.
  11. Well, shows how much I know. Even for an auto?
  12. Dyno results from after the rebuild and while the carbs were still good. Not bad for an L28.
  13. Thanks for the input. I'm taking it to Daniel at DJM this week and we are going to sit down and have a look at what we can do with it. He is thinking stainless steel extractors and a 2" exhaust with the 240Z carbs.

    240Z Carbs

Hey guys, Looking for a complete set of 240Z carbs so I can finally get my 260Z on the road.
  15. So talking to the PO, it's apparently got 260Z carbs and head on a L28 block bored out to 2960l with high pistons and a 1440 hybrid cam. I don't even know if I heard all of that correctly or what half of it means... but anyway. He reckons he spent a fortune sourcing the original 260Z carbs so that he could keep it original but he only ever had a shot at tuning them himself and a professional has never had a crack. Is it really worth switching to the 240Z carbs and are the carbs I have as bad as people say? I am basically looking for the best trade off between price, performance and reliability. It's not a track car and not a daily driver but I still want it to run well. Unfortunately I'm not educated enough to make good decisions.
  16. Yeah, I'm sure that if he really wanted to he could get them working if he was determined to but the PO owner had plenty of people look at them and get nowhere too. I don't know what would be best for me though in terms of price vs. performance vs. reliability. I need to do some reading I guess.
  17. It's running super rich at the moment and the 260Z carbs are rubbish. It'd be cheaper to replace them than spending a ridiculous amount of time getting the 260Z carbs to work.
  18. Still available? I need a set for my L28 to get roadworthy.
  19. Went to the mechanic and as I suspected, the first thing I need to do is replace the 260Z carbs! I'm already on the hunt for a stereo, mirrors, an air dam and wheels though.
  20. My new car arrived last night! I couldn't be more happy with it! The body and interior are perfect and it handles like a go kart but with a ridiculous, monstrous, snarling engine under the hood. It's so silly and so awesome. Getting the RWC done today.
  21. I love rat style bikes too and will probably make a "Mad Max" style bobber as my next project. This bike was just too pretty to modify though. I looked at doing clip-ons and rear sets but being a 250 it's rather small and I think it would be too uncomfortable. Very fun bike to ride around town though, cutting between traffic. It's not great on the highway but a simple sprocket change will fix that.
  22. Just thought that I would show off my bike: a 1988 Honda GB250 Clubman. These bikes were only sold in Japan as far as I know and were Honda's version of a cafe racer out of the factory. This is how it looked when I picked it up. $2500 running perfectly with the only downsides being that it's an import (I speak Japanese so it's not a real issue for me) and that it had a bit of surface rust on the exhaust. I wanted to take the cafe racer look a lot further so I fitted a bump stop seat from Japan. http://i.imgur.com/z4pm7.jpg[/img] Please excuse the dirt. Rained on the way home last night... Rear profile: http://i.imgur.com/rcV10.jpg[/img] Rear profile: http://i.imgur.com/Zzyqh.jpg[/img] Front end: http://i.imgur.com/bcsTk.jpg[/img] I love the look of the bump stop but I do need to tidy up the back end a touch. I'm not entirely sure what to do here. No amount of adjustment to the seat will make it fit. Any suggestions? http://i.imgur.com/Ifl3i.jpg[/img] Although it specifically designed for my bike, it really doesn't fit very well. Any suggestions on what I could do to improve the back end? I haven't had a chance to get to the paint shop but this is how the bump stop will look when painted. http://i.imgur.com/iBMQr.jpg[/img] I may put a two-tone vinyl sticker on there to match the tank but I'm not sure yet. It looks clean enough just in green I think. Once all this is done I'll be happy with the look of the bike and I'll move on to improving the performance a bit. It's a little slow off the line and the rear sprocket is wrong I think as I'm revving the hell out of it just to sit on 100kmh (60mph). Anyway, just thought I would show off my daily "driver". You don't see many cafe racers around the streets but they really are great fun to put together as the whole idea is to make something cool and fast on a very tight budget.
  23. Just gave Daniel at DJM Automotive a call and although he doesn't do RWC any more, he is going to help me get it done. Sounds like a nice guy, thanks for the recommendations.
  24. I get the car in Melbourne on the 16th. I'll spill the beans with regards to cost then. I will say though that I got an absolute bargain but I don't want to gloat to much because of the unfortunate luck of the previous owner.
  25. I'll give DJM a call on Wednesday and see if they can help. Thanks guys. It's actually a sad story with the car. The bloke I bought from spent a significant bit of money on it only to run into bad health and he is now unable to drive. He only managed to put 5000km on it. Every single aspect of the car was completely restored and it has barely been driven since then so I doubt it will have problems with the RWC. I'm realistic about the age of these cars but I think I should be OK. I'll definitely come along for the Christmas BBQ. Hopefully I can convince the old man to get his Z rolling by that time too. Another shot of the car: I'm actually a photographer and videographer by trade so once I actually get the car in Melbourne, I'll probably be spamming you with pictures.
