  1. Hmmm - that grey zed is awesome. Now I'm trying to decide whether to shave the side indicators off, and/or the vents..... wondering how that'd look on a white car. Anyone got any opinions on shaving vents or indicators, which i should/shouldn't do? And damn I hope my car looks even halfway as good as that thing....
  2. Lol - yeah, i had the same realisation on the weekend when i made a new dogleg for mine...
  3. well, i used a sack of sand on the top, and a rubber mallet underneath on one of mine, but the problem is, because its such a large area, the metal is stretched, and it has plenty of panel to flex and just pops back a bit.... its going to be pretty difficult to get them out, mine has 3 fairly shallow ones (1 is very shallow, since i improved it) and two of them are right up the front, where there is a reinforced crosspiece in the roof, so i can't really panelbeat them. I'm about resigned to sticking filler back into them..... The one i got to is now pretty good, but still needs a skim of filler.
  4. Was your silvia a turbo, or naturally aspirated? My girlfriend is getting a 2 litre non turbo silvia, I'm curious to know what they go like....
  5. Well, aparently they experience front end lift same as '69 Stingray Corvettes, I can't remember what speed it is - 180km/h off the top of my head. Fix it with a front spoiler And with upgraded front brakes, good suspension and wide good compound tyres, why wouldn't a Zed be as safe as any other car over 200km/h? Providing of course all the steering links and suspension bushes are ok...

    Dogleg done!

From the album: Updates (split it up a bit)

Wheelarch lip formed, curved piece cut out of dogleg, ready to go!

    Half done...

From the album: Updates (split it up a bit)

New piece curved, folded, and welded in place.
  8. 125 miles an hour is slightly over 200km/h.... The thing which determines how much less your 'true' top speed is, is a combination of drag and horsepower - the more power and torque you have, the less the wind resistance and rolling resistance effects it. So I reckon with the extra power of a strong L31, you could get at least close to 300km/h..... The L28ET guys might have some input on this one.....
  9. yes - when I put in the L31, i may need a 300km/h speedo... Assuming I have the early 80's 280zx box, which I'm pretty sure I do, with my standard diff at 7,500rpm I can on paper reach 325km/h. With a 3.7 diff it comes down to 310km/h..... Even at 6000 rpm with standard diff and assuming I have the gearbox I think I do, I can do 260km/h. Obviously wind resistance and rolling resistance will pull it down a bit, but I reckon the L31 should be able to get pretty close to 300.... Standard speedo only goes to 240. Hmmm. Oh yeah, and Gav, whats your reasoning behind the 260 5 speeds being better than 280 boxes? according to http://zhome.com/ZCMnL/tech/GearRatios.html, the late 260 boxes (77 - 79), assuming they are the same as US 280z's, will give you quicker acceleration in lower gears, but the earlier 260 box and to a smaller extent 280zx boxes may be better with a higher diff ratio....

    RUST!!!

From the album: Updates (split it up a bit)

tricky little bit there, went down the side a little bit as well as the flat there.

    Fixed!

From the album: Updates (split it up a bit)

Although the edge on the inner is straight, its fine, because there is a 2mm thick reinforcing plate on the body there which it attaches to, so it reaches far enough as it is. And it does have the proper curve to match the panel.
  12. From the album: Updates (split it up a bit)

Welded on, welds ground back, polished up a bit. Still needs couple of little welds, and a skin of filler over where the welds went, but looking good.
  13. How'd you end up going with getting that one off today Gav?
  14. Sorry, going to have to vote against the BMW colour - it looks kind of washed out to me, maybe its all the light colours around it reflecting, but yeah.... Much prefer the original green, as you said there are too many red zeds around. Part of the reason I'm going white.
  15. Well, I intended to... just had a look at one of my doors, the only possible place I can see is between the window track and rear of the door - directly below the actual locking assembly.... Looks like a pain to set up though - perhaps pay someone else to do it?
  16. That is VERY nice.... group buy anyone?
  17. Pin punch photo attached - should be able to pick up a set of punches at super cheap or somewhere like that for about $10 or so.... Its just a punch with a flat end, rather than a point (centrepunch), and you use it to tap the edge of the hole in the gland nut...... Far as the hex nuts go, whereabouts are you? I work on Highbury Rd in Burwood, so if you can make it there between 8am and 4.45pm on a weekday, or between 8.30am and about 1-2pm on this Saturday, I'll take them to work, otherwise... I dunno, i live in Watsonia... Zedrally - You don't happen to live on Atherton Rd, with 2 or 3 half assembled zeds in your front yard, do you?
  18. the way I'd suggest to undo them, is grab a pin punch, and put it in the hole in the nut, then tap it round with a hammer to undo - they should come undone very easily like this, due to the impact (some reason tends to crack really tight bolts very easily - if someone has a brake/clutch line flare nut they can't undo, i have a trick for that too ). As far as the hexagonal nuts go, I have 3 sitting on my bench, you're welcome to them.
  19. well, 245's are a shade over 9.5 inches wide, so with a sidewall profile of 50 (or 122.5 mm) you shouldn't have big issues with the stretch - if it concerns you, go up to 255s, which are 10 inch wide. Or you could fit the tyres i'm getting next week - in metric, they are 295/80 R15 - or 34x11.5 inch. Might have traction problems though, since they are 'extreme' offroad tyres
  20. why does the floor behind the seats make a difference? Bit confused.....
  21. I would have thought you could get away with a 20mm offset on a 16x7? Anyways, I want that style of thing - thin 'race lace' as they call it... I know BBS have some similar, but probably pretty expensive....
  22. Hmmm - i wonder whether my locks and hinges would fit into a 240 door, then... more than likely its going to be a different shape though, I suppose, since mines a 76...
  23. I don't have any wheels to suit flares, and I don't really see myself putting them on..... I'm intending to run something like Speedy Hyperfang IIs, or similar style rim, under standard gaurds - if I were to run flares, I'd prob. have to rethink it.
  24. Nice.... I'm loving the white one.... Out of curiousity though, if anyone gets bored, could they photoshop the stickers out and make the flares white for me? My photoshop is stuffed, and I'm not good at it anyways... I may yet go for flares anyway, but I'm not keen on them at the moment....
