Tensioning Timing chain

Hey guys,

 

is it possible to tension up the chain without pulling all the covers and pulleys off the front of the block?

 

My chain is getting loose and noisey.

Referring to an L-series, I don't know an easy way.

I guess you could get shims for the cam towers, which would raise the cam sprocket and take up some slack. I'm not sure what the consequences of this would be though on your rocker arms, etc.

Everything else (chain tensioner and guides) aren't really accessible unless you go the whole nine yards and rip the front off

SO let me get this straight, you haven't even looked in your Manual???

 

There's 3 positions on the front cam sprocket that you use to adjust chain tension.

 

If the dowel is already in Pos.3, then it's time to renew the chain, otherwise you should be able to tighten it up.

I have looked at my two recently bought manuals....... : )

 

Just wanted to double check to see if there was an easier way as the east west engine layouts are so much easier to work on for this type of job.

No offence ZD, but what can be easier to work on then a N/S L6???!

Yer have to agree with lurch the l series is super easy to work on.

 

I definatly wouldnt shim the towers to take op the chain slack as its more work than replacing the chain and tensioner assembly.

 

Also its not that expensive to get a new chain and tensioners (around $90)
