SS30RR Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 Hi Guys, Just wanted to confirm if a L24 block can take L28 pistons? If so which head gasket would work? I assume the earlier L28 head gaskets? Thanks. Quote
jamo240 Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 No...L28 is 86mm bore, L24 is 83mm. You don't want to take it out 3mm as the bores would be on the thin side. Get an L28 block. Jamo Quote
peter mc Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 Yep i take them to 85 some times, bluebird pistons have it sonic tested first ,, some only go to 84.5 Quote
dat2kman Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 Biggest issue is core shift at time of block casting, sometimes you can be lucky, no core shift, and can punch it out nicely. Other option is to fit thick wall CDC sleeves, but why? Only if you wanted to keep matching numbers i spise! As pete says, first step, sonic test it for bore wall thicknesses, then talk to machining shop, then order pistons, but wait, what crank? Stroke it a bit? Then use stock 133 mm 240 rods, which you have, get pistons custom made with lower height. What you cant get on a bigger bore, you can get with a longer stroke. Then need to watch what head you use, may have to run bore notches to clear valves, etc. Lots of things to think about! Or, Just whack in a L28 on triples Problem solved! Quote
C.A.R. Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 It's been done more times than I can remember! BUT as the other have said, you MUST have the block sonic tested to make sure it can take the 86mm bore. Quote
SS30RR Posted September 23, 2012 Author Posted September 23, 2012 would you just use a L28 head gasket for this ? Quote
