Fitting Black Dragon Door Weatherstrips - advice wanted please

Hi, I got the Black Dragon Weatherstrip kit off another member on here as it was surplus to his requirement.

I am hoping someone else on here has experience fitting this kit and can advise me. There is probably an easy explanation for all this but at the risk of looking dumb, here goes....

 

Went to fit the door strips and found they look completely different. The worn out weatherstrips on my car are one piece and have a "plastic coated u channel type metal piece" (my description) on one side that just pushes over the seams around the doors to sit quite easily. However the replacement weatherstrips are just one rubber piece without the plastic coated u channel type metal piece. How do I fit this?

 

Do I  cut the old rubber of the plastic coated u channel type metal piece clean it up and glue the new weather strip to it so that it will fit like originally onto the seam around the door - to me looks like it would be hard to get it to stick and could cause potential problems later.

 

Or do I pull my seal off all together and push the new rubber weather strip onto the seam - gluing it in place. If this is how it was meant to be done I reckon it would look pretty bad as the plastic coated u channel type metal piece pushes up against the hoodlining etc and it would not look right without it.

 

I am hoping people with experience with this can understand my explanation. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I couldn't work out how to fit my BD ones either, the channel is completely different. Not even glue could help them go on.

Hi

If they are the seals that fit on top of the door and if it has a part name of 59-743 you have the seal for a 280z/260z only

These seals fit in a Chrome U channel on top of chrome widow frame of a 260z post '75

Hey silverZ...the new ones should glue onto the flange on the body where the old seal (metal channel) pinched onto. From vague memory, the metal channel seals were not OEM fit...they are a universal seal that is used to replace OEM seals, so it's possible they are not the originals. I had the metal channel ones on my car which I'd used to replace the damaged original ones. The new ones i used were the glue on type. You just put the contact adhesive on a foot or so at a time and then work your way around the seal until it's all glued on. Works quite ok and will effect a better seal...mine are actually water tight now...I can wash the car and water doesn't come in.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I quite sure the kit is actually for a 240Z it does not have the separate door sash rubbers for the 280Z/260Z. I am going away again for just ove a week so I will have another look at this when I return.
