ZD44TT Posted June 20, 2007 Posted June 20, 2007 Hi guys...........can someone run me through the process of making an ajustment.......seems to be getting abit noisey these days .......or was before and I didn't realise.........tapping sound near the cylinder nearest to the radiator. Quote
JP240z Posted June 20, 2007 Posted June 20, 2007 they have nuts to lock them in place from memory Quote
Rod F Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 You'll need two spanners, I can't remember the exact sizes. One is to loosen the lock nut, while the other adjusts the height (and hence the tapet clearance). If you're adjusting while hot, work quickly, otherwise wait overnight and adjust to cold clearances. Loosen the lock nut, stick your gauge in and adjust until you're happy I find the clearance shifts slightly when tightening the lock nut, so keep this in mind. Also, if you're rocker cover gasket is a bit second-hand, maybe replace it at the same time. Hope this helps. Quote
ZD44TT Posted June 21, 2007 Author Posted June 21, 2007 by gauge I take it you mean those thin metal slips with varying thickness right? if so what thickness should i go for? or am I way off here. JP240z Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 feeler gauges is what they're called, you will need 0.018 mm on the intake, and 0.025 on the exhaust from memory, but dont quote me, refer to your manual, it has all the info there. Quote
sco_aus Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 if you dont have a manual, let me know Will. But I wont be able to read it till next weekend Quote
Rod F Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 I've got a manual at home, do you have an L24, L26 or an L28 motor? Quote
ZD44TT Posted June 23, 2007 Author Posted June 23, 2007 I've got a manual at home, do you have an L24, L26 or an L28 motor? I've got a L26 actually...........thanks for the help guys.........hahahha didn't know they were called feeler gauges...........funny. Quote
sco_aus Posted June 23, 2007 Posted June 23, 2007 haha, i could have sworn you told me L28 my bad Quote
ZD44TT Posted June 23, 2007 Author Posted June 23, 2007 haha, i could have sworn you told me L28 my bad that I may have...........hehehhe oops. hmmm.........i'll check tmrw. Quote
nat0_240_chevZ Posted June 24, 2007 Posted June 24, 2007 ok, to clear things up rocker arm to cam clearances are 0.18 (not 0,018) intake and 0.25 (not 0,025)mm for exhaust. yes they are called feeler or slip gauges. best to set when hot (unfortunately as cold is easier but heat changes you clearances dramatically) ther is a hot and cold clearance!!!! clearances are the same for l24,26,28,30 & 31 for the stroker boys. heres some interesting info however, if you set them higher than spec ie .25 &.35 it shifts peak tourque up the rev range, and lower than spec (not realy recommended as if you go too close will cause pre-matue wear / failure of rocker lash & cam lobe) shifts tourge down a bit lower in the rpm range. Yes, the clearance changes as you tighten the locknut, (becomes less) so be aware of it and you will work out that you must check after you are all tourqed up. each one tightens up differently so keep an eye on it. i belive from memory the spanner sizes are 14mm & 17mm?? or 15mm & 17mm bit vauge on this as it has been a very long time since i even had an l-series motor let alone done a valve clearance check. valve clearance is deducted of your cam lift before multiplying by your rocker arm ratio. ie (cam lift = 10.5mm - 0.18mm(clearance)) x 1.2 (rocker arm ratio)= actual lift @ the valve just thought id let you boys in on a bit of wealth, as sounded like you were all struggling!!! nato Quote
