Bigfella Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 Hey guys I have got me another shell. Starting over again. I have a question, on my previous shell I had taken the roof skin of and was very surprised how much rust was forming under it. As i don't need to remove the skin of this one I am a little worried the time bomb is ticking under there. Has anyone got any suggestions for what is a good treatment to maybe spray up and under the hard to get at spots. I know fish oil works as a preventative. But I don't think it will stop any rust that has started forming.. Thanks Matt O Quote
gilltech Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 All you can do is pump plenty of fisholine or a commercial rust preventer into every possible crevice & coat the backs of all panels, the more the better to treat any existing rust & seal it over against the air/moisture; if it's fully sealed over then rust can't progress. Can you perhaps invert the body shell to do the roof & roof rails? I used to use a proprietary spray-in rust preventer, but after that disappeared from the market I substituted a proprietary fisholene product & after a couple of decades still have had no rust issues at all. The spray cans having an optional fine tube inserted in the nozzle like CRC or WD-40 cans. The stuff cures off & the stinky smell goes away after a few days. For peace of mind use plenty of the stuff, & just wipe away unwanted runs & drips with turps. Quote
Bigfella Posted January 2, 2012 Author Posted January 2, 2012 They car is going back onto a rotissory . So I will be able to spin it and poor the stuf in. I hope fish oil will do the job. Other than pulling every panel of and treating it. I don't know what else to do. Quote
gilltech Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 Well I used a proprietary spray-in fisholene rust-proofing product, from memory I think it was the CRC brand. Anyway, I applied plenty of the stuff using at least two coats in everywhere, particularly doors, sills & rear tubs, not a fun job. After many years the stuff has cured off a bit so no longer as surface-sticky but still has a soft feel to it. I'm pretty confident that the result plus keeping the car as dry as possible will see the car outlast me. Quote
Ledge Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 HI We use a product called Cavity wax. works very good. I wouldnt advise putting fishoil products on till after you have painted your car, Have seen it cause reactions in paint when its done first. Regards Paul Quote
