After years building the mechanicals I thought the bodywork would be easy - how wrong can one be. Anyway, after getting the new profiles on the door just about right I put some final bodyfiller on last night and as I started to sand it this morning I find it's still soft. It's obvious I didn't put enough hardener in the mix but what do I do now? Will it cure given enough time, or if I hit it with a hairdryer, or does it all have to be scrapped off... Bugger.

sometimes you can get away with putting some more hardner on if the bog is only thin. wait a while then sand. however if its a thick lot of bog. scrape it out

If its soft it will never be any good, I dont believe adding some hardner to the surface will help either, best thing to do is either scrape it off, or if its just a thin finishing coat, use a rag and thinners this will wipe it off with some effort and make sure nothing is left in any small pin holes on the base filler you applied it too, not cleaning these areas out and applying over the top will most likely result in defects later down the track in your paintwork.

Applying to much hardner causes a rapid reaction, minimal working time and also air bubles in the setting filler due to the reaction, if you want to get consistancy every time and dont do fill work often, grab a coffee cup, work out its volume to the tin you have purchased and then devide the total cups measured by the hardner supplied, then uses a syringe to add hardner by the number of cups you prep each time.

John - thanks for that. As I started to use the filler I was anxious not to use up the hardener too early and I was a bit frugal with the last mix.

Thanks all - A scrapped it all out... what's 15 minutes in 6 years.
