Hi Evan,

I should have been clearer when I mentioned the preload. You said that you changed the front pinion driving flange. The pinion nut that holds it on is tightened to a torque that sets the preload on the front pinion bearing. (Not too loose. Not too tight). This is important for the long life of the bearings and operation of the diff. A simple test is as follows. Quoted from the Haynes Book. Attach a spring to one of the bolt holes in the pinion drive flange and exert a pull, noting the reading on the balance ( This indicates the force required to turn the pinion )and this is the preload. This should be between 7 and 9 lb (3.2 to 4.2 kg ). Hope this helps. Regards David.

haha, nah mate, the car is set up for as much balance as possible, so i use the same type of tyres front and back. At the moment they are the same diameter, but soon when I put my flares on I will be wearing 235 on rear and 215 front. But they are semi slicks.

I need them, 17x8 with not the best offset, plus the fronts wont turn properly without them and since I have a lot of castor, it just rubs on the front. Plus I want the flare look anyways.

Sounds like it might be an offset issue. I have 17x9's all round on mine and 255 on the rear. No flares or rubbing. Mind you I have now flared them 20mm so I can get another 20mm of rubber on the back when I get a new set of 19's for the beast.

presume you are running coilovers then.........

as a matter of interest, anyone run a set of 15x235x60 MT Street ET's under there rear guards (240Z)WITHOUT coilovers?

thanks for the info david, i'll get myself a force pull measurer thing and see how it goes, i'm thinking i probably dont have it tight enough so thanks for letting me know!

meanwhile i'd recommend an lsd to everyone, awesome fun in the wet lol, it now behaves in the same way sorta that makes my bro's go kart fun, and the scary steering issues i've mentioned previously on long fast bends in the wet are completely gone although i dont really understand the link between the two as the wheels were/are never loosing traction but it no longer oversteers really badly at a certain point so i'm happy

Evan, you can just use a small scale for weighing fish from the tackle shop. This will do the job just fine. By the way I use an R200 (3.9 ratio) with a Phantom grip LSD that I got from the USA. Cost about $380au. Works like a LSD around corners and a detroit locker in a straight line. David.

yeah lol, thats the kind of measureing thing i was talking about, i think they have a couple at work so i'll grab one on monday :D

i was reading something about those phantom grip things, sounds like a cheaper alternative, but i'm happy

mmm, phantom slip, ok they do work a bit, bit id be weary of any metal shavings from the 2 blocks of ally i think they were, that may result in use.

good simple idea, not as good engineering, but still useful to some degree.

ive found that when rebuilt, the phantom slip cooks the shim washer where the side gears meet with the carrier body.

for those that dont know, the phantom grip is 2 blocks of ally?, with springs between them which push the side gears outwards, which gives friction reaction to try and lock the 2 sides together but only has a very small frictional surface, so not recomended for those with good->big torque numbers.

just a tip for future reference.

anyone actually used an R32 GTR rear R200 LSD carrier in their long nose S30 R200 with S30 halfshafts(ie not using the GTR stubs)?

my research says it's not possible due to a different spline count on the stubs....30 on the GTR and 29 on the S30's

anyone refute this?????

Phantom Grip LSD diff converter constructed from aerospace alloys not (aluminium or steel ) with over 500,000 miles of performance testing on a variety of street and race cars . Heat treated and rockwell tested. Even the springs are a bluprinted matched set. For anyone interested read the testimonials at www.phantomgrip.com. This is not an advertisment, just a statement to say that my 260z performs exceptionally well in the wet and the dry on a cheap alternative. David.

yeah it sounds interesting, but how much is a standard r200 worth? i saw a 3.7:1 on ozdat for $500, so if i sold my old diff for that then they work out to be close to the same amount?

plus now i have a better ratio, only issue with that is where do i get the speedo gears from? lol

yes me!!!

have it in now with the uni's till i pull it all apart and put the 280zx cvs in.

check classifide for the r33 cv lsd add from sco aus. as i chime in with a how to with a few fone pics.

its the r33's that go to 31 spline in s2 i think, early r33's had 29 output splines.

but the gtr carriers have m13 crownwheel bolts unlike the m12 in all the late s30 onwards and other jap cars with the dana spicer rear ends

i had a look at an r200 lsd out of an r32 gtr(rear diff) yesterday......

-my 280zx turbo 1/2 shafts are 29 spline stubs

-the gtr stubs were 30 spline

2 of us counted them 3 times each, there was no mistake

the 280 stubs did slide in and felt ok however my maths says 30/29=trouble

searched and found a guy on hybridz saying this ^^ as well

anyone who thinks they can get the gtr lsd carrier to work and wants to buy the above mentioned diff let me know :o

you wernt counting #1 twice, commonly i do it,

when the carrier centre was sent to me the fellow sweared on his life about the spline count and it was from an r32 gtr. he was quite familiar with the centres themselvs aswell as the changeover to the 31 spline in the r33. But my centre has 29 splines and i also grabbed a gtst stub output and it too also plgged in snuggly as per the photos on the above thread.

Im not saying its not possible they are 30, but mine was a gtr carrier from an r32 as i can differentiate the diff from the bolt dia's,

hope i didnt miscount and the thing fits up of anyways lol.

Just a word of warning to anyone, when I was first looking at upgrading my diff centre, I looked into the CV conversion aswell. When I was talking to Warren at Zbits or Zparts (which ever one hes at), he told me that skyline centres cant fit into longnose housings. I have a 29 spline R33 (GTST) Cusco 2 way in mine now with very few mods, so dont believe everything the "experts" tell you, ask people who might have done it before.

End rant/

P.S I have a CV conversion setup for sale :P :p

280zx shafts????

how much would you let me take them outta your garage for???

as the z31 shafts are way too long and dont have enough spline to just recut new groovs for the circlip.
