::)  In the process of fitting rear panels containing speakers into boot section. Is there a need for me to fit some form of material at the back of the speakers where they protrude from the rear of the panels  to add to their perfomance or protect them in some way.

A picture of what you're building may help. Are they on the side or at the back? A speaker in a box will help with bass reflex over the free air type.

There's a certain amount of space required behind speakers depending on their size.

;) What Ive done Scoot is cut into the two side panels that fit either side in the rear of the car. Actually cut out the sections where the speakers are normally fitted behind the panels.

I'm not sure if you can get them over there but here, we have speaker pods (for lack of a better name) made of foam that enclose the rear of small speakers. This helps with a more controlled speaker (improving sound), but I wouldn't expect any miracles.

The biggest thing to try and do and isolate the rear wave of the speaker from the front wave, in other words, isolate the sound coming off the rear of the speaker from the sound coming off the front of the speaker, as much as possible.

The other thing that will help, and a lot I might add, is solidly mounting the speakers. Building a bracket that attaches to the structure of the car to support the speaker will help improve sound, along with reducing rattles and buzzing from interior panels.

;D They are Pioneer TS-A1670S units, 3way 18cm , 180W max /35W nom ,4 Ohm impdnce . Stivva gave them to me. He mentioned something about putting foam at the back of them once they were installed. Might have a chat with him for more info now that I think of it.
