260Z Fuel Tank Breather Leak

Hey guys,

 

I was driving the car home today and as I turned into the driveway and turned the car off I got a very strong smell of fuel. I got out of the car to find the  rubber hose next to the fuel pump (I assume the tank breather hose) was gushing out fuel. About 3-4 litres came out before it stopped and now it is as if there is nothing wrong. This has never happened before and I have no idea what would cause it... Any ideas?

 

My car is a 75 260Z if it matters and it has an aftermarket electric fuel pump. I filled it to full last night but it did not leak fuel at all until this afternoon after I drove about 85km on this tank.

The breather on my 240z was all rotted out and kinked and used to leak when I tried to fill the tank up to full. However yours leaking 3-4 litres 85km or so after filling up sounds different.

I am not familiar with the electric fuel pump system on the 260Z but could it be leaking from where the pump draws the fuel from the tank?

It was not that difficult to drop the tank out on mine and I suspect it would be similar for a 260Z. This is probably the way to go so you can deal with all the tank issues at once.

We made a new breather for my tank after we located the right diameter hose with the correct bend and modified it to fit using brass plumbing fittings and it works a treat.

I got under the car yesterday and had a look for any obvious signs of leaks or rotting hose and most of it looks fresh. I have to add that it was definitely coming out of the breather hose and nowhere else... and it was more of a stream than a slow leak!

 

I might take it for a spin today and see if I can replicate the failure however I think it might have had something to do with the temperature as it was much warmer yesterday than it has been since I bought it in autumn this year (I got sunburnt!)
