NORBY Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 Hey guys, My names trav, im looking into buying a 260z and i thought i would introduce myself a little here Im a youngish bloke (22) who has been working on cars for a few years now. I started off with a 1990 toyota cressida (7mge) which destroyed its headgasket when i first bought it almost, for anyone who knows much about toyotas, it was always going to happen on the 7m. I guess this was my first 'tinkering' besides helping the old man fix his ke70 'rolla back when he had it. From then on i have had reasonably trouble free motoring in nothing too exciting. My current car is a highly modified mitsubishi magna (lol?) which looks 100% stock but has 190.2kw at the wheels which equates to 13.8 quarter mile. It has very lumpy cams, new valvew springs, bored out to a 3.6L, ecu, injectors, exhaust, port and polished heads etc etc all the go fast bits As you can imagine a magna with that kind of power (N/A mind you, no turbos here!) isnt 'nice' to drive at all, but its sure fast! A few years back i was reading through a few sites, and looking at japanese nostalgic car magazine website, and i came across two cars which i really liked a datsun 1600, and a 240z. As a youngster i didnt mind a bit of japanese cartoons, so im also aware of devil Z and very much liked that too. I guess a Z appeals to me because they, in my books, are one of the most iconic japanese cars ever. I always thought that they would be far too expensive, but reading through this forum they are very much in my price bracket. I have no qualifications or expertise with cars, im just out of uni with a couple of degrees (Human Resource Management and Accounting for those playing at home) but i love tinkering and dont mind giving it all a go. I've pulled apart plenty of interiors, exteriors and engines. Im not so schooled on the rust removal techniques, but see how we go hey! Hopefully i can get a reasonably rust free(ish) one! Theres some absolutely beautiful cars here and i would love to own one just like those. My plans is to build a nice clean 260z in either gunmetal or red with big flares and nice wide tread on the back, a couple of nice bucket seats and just cruise around like that for a while... we all know that those plans never last, after all the magna i have now was meant to stay stock..... I've had several before and found them to be sort of allright..Would've liked to find a manual V6 TE or later (That gets rid of most of their problems!) but never did. So I setteled for a 240Z (jk). Best advice is keep saving, and keep your ear to the ground.. Alot of bargain cars have come and gone and there is nothing worse than a car available for sale and not having any funds.. been there several times! Quote

Great to see such a good community though, seems like everyone helps each other out which is what made building my current car so fun! Administrators gav240z Posted June 3, 2011 Administrators Posted June 3, 2011 Welcome champ, Well as Dimitri mentioned good cars have come up a few times, plenty of unfinished projects come up. I think enthusiasm wanes when the car is off the road too long and the massive task of getting it all done seems daunting to many. Not to mention funds dry out. You can definitely take advantage of that and pick up a gem when someone is moving house or their better half is in their ear to "get rid of that damn car, it's in the way". . To quote one of our new members "Out of all the cars I've owned the 240z is the most fun". I'll have to agree with that, it might not be the fastest or the best handling by today's standards but it's definitely 1 of the most fun cars I've ever driven. Even the ones with shot suspension, worn brakes, destroyed bushes, shot steering racks. They are still loads of fun to drive. Good luck. Quote
