Hey guys, I'm new to the forum and I have recently purchased a 240z. I started having ignition problems soon after I bought it and the starter motor quickly gave in. I had it rebuilt and put it back into the car. Upon taking the car for a test drive the starter was incredibly hot and making a loud noise (almost as if parts inside it were broken off and spinning around), at the same time this was happening my headunit and tacho were constantly loosing connection. Anyway I parked the car back into my driveway and sure enough it wouldn't crank over. I talked to my auto electrician (same one who rebuilt the started) and  he told me it must be the ignition barrel as the ignition barrel was very loose and at times it was quite hard to pull the key out. I ordered a new starter motor and ignition barrel from America and installed it today. The car turns over like a beast but my headunit and tacho are still flickering on and off. At this point I'm scared to take it out for a test drive as I don't want the new starter to break.

Any advice you guys could give me would be great :)

Thanks for reading.

Welcome to the forums...

First I'd be checking all the electrical connections from the battery to the starter; the main positive and the fusible link and grounds. Make sure they are clean and tight. Any corrosion will cause intermittent problems.

Also check your fuses.

I had a problem with the headlights on my car, changed them, checked this and that..... turned/rotated the fuses and problem solved. Poor connection

Mate your auto electrician ripped you off. He had no idea what he was doing. There was nothing wrong with your old starter motor. The problem will most likely be in your key barrell. A common problem in Zeds. They start to go and intermittently work. Mine did the same thing and the same on my brothers Zed. I put a push button start in mine. About $20- from Chin eBay. It is fantastic. But I have an alarm and various other security in may car. But refer past posts on this push button start. You should probably source a new key barrell.

Like suggest below I would be checking your battery connections and earth.

Oh and if you don't have an electronic ignition put one in.

Good luck

Thanks for all the advice, I checked the fuses this morning and then took the car out for a drive. The tacho and headunit were fixed but I have a little digital gauge that shows engine temp and that was flickering then stopped working all together. Also when I was turning the steering wheel it would clip the indicator and turn it on for a second then turn it off. Any ideas on what it could be?
