aegean Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 I found these 3 wires today, not going anywhere. The second photo shows a wire coming from the switch behind it, and this is connected to the accelerator pedal. When the accelerator is pressed hard down, this switch clicks. Where is this wire supposed to go, and what is the purpose of it ? Wire set number two is in a similar location. As you can see, there are two of them. The one with the strange end on it is live with the ignition on. The other one is not. Again, I can't see where this goes, particularly with this strange terminal at the end. Sorry about the focus - the camera wanted to focus on what was behind it, but if you know the wires, you probably know what it's for. Quote
Sirpent Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 Your cars an auto ? Looks like the kickdown switch in which case it should have 2 wires coming from it, these send a signal to the downshift solenoid on your transmission which tells it to downshift a gear under heavy / overtaking acceleration. The 2 wires you see hanging are probably the feed wires to it except one on the back of the switch is missing ! EDIT: Just took a closer look, the wire is there and still connected to the other wire via the connector, your second wire plugs into the one on the back of the switch that is left, havnt you noticed a lack of acceleration when you pland it? That switch if stuffed is pretty generic, Id take it off and head to an auto elec. Quote
aegean Posted March 28, 2011 Author Posted March 28, 2011 So you're saying that the 3 wires and the switch should be connected ? I don't think they are long enough but will check in the morning and if it does look like that's where they go, I will try and reconnect them - assuming that I can get that strange connector on the back of the switch - if it isn't broken and hence the reason why it is hanging down. Yes, it is an auto, but I haven't driven it. There is a problem with one of the carbs and I can't get any power to the back 3 cylinders. That's yet another problem to sort out ! Quote
Sirpent Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 Are the wires green? And do they match the ones on the back of the switch? If so I am 100% sure thats your problem. Quote
aegean Posted March 28, 2011 Author Posted March 28, 2011 It looks like Green going into Black, however it is not long enough to connect one to the other. I will look in daylight and see if there is a terminal missing from the switch and if I can see any other connectors not going anywhere. Quote
Ben Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 It is the kick down switch. She'll be a real slug without it being connected... Quote
aegean Posted March 28, 2011 Author Posted March 28, 2011 It is indeed the kick down switch, however and for an unknown reason, the wires will not reach the switch. The strange looking connection was in fact part of the switch that had broken off. Maybe someone has wrapped the wires around something making them too short, but at this stage, I can't see where. If anyone has a spare switch from a wreck, please let me know. Quote
Ben Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 There should be some more slack in the dash harness - its probably been tucked up somewhere... Quote
aegean Posted March 29, 2011 Author Posted March 29, 2011 Wherever it is hooked up, it is pretty stuck, so will just extend the wires. Quote
zeds4ever Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 Agean, By the way there is another kick down unit in place which comes from the manifold down to the gear box itself. If your switch is stuffed let me know. Have one here somewhere.Yours for a donation to site & postage. LOL. Regards : Alan. Quote
aegean Posted March 29, 2011 Author Posted March 29, 2011 The terminal has broken off and there is no where I can solder it back on. It has taken with it the surrounding plastic. I had a good look but there is no way to repair it. I like your offer and will send you a PM. Quote
zeds4ever Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 G'day Craig, Ive taken the kick down switch out of my project car for you, as I have to do some soldering myself anyway. I will mail the switch today don't worry about postage, the info & enjoyment I get from "The Site" more than off sets this cost just remember to send a Donation to it. From what I see by your pics the small white cnctr terminal that is situated just below where the kick down switch is where you connect the switch to. There is a red/white trce wire & also a green/white trace wire fitted into this trmnl this is where you cnct the k/down switch wires to. For some reason the cnctn termnls are dfrnt so you will have to change them to suit. When you remove your switch best to use a Shifter to hold switch itself as the brkt that holds it is not the strongest & will flex, there is a nut that locks the switch in place on back of this brkt. You will need a 17ml ring spanner prfrbly to loosen it. This was how I rmvd my switch. Don't know what the other wire is could have been for something not normally in car, check to see where it is attached to & if it is still active. Looking at your plcs Iwould be checking the heater unit out to as the signs don't look good "Rust ,etc" is something to be concerned about Regards: Alan. Quote
zeds4ever Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 Hey Craig mate, has your switch arrived yet. Regards : Alan. Quote
aegean Posted April 3, 2011 Author Posted April 3, 2011 Switch has arrived and now installed ! Can't test it until I replace the wheel cylinder that is off the car, but as soon as it is reinstalled, I will let you know. Carbs are also sorted out. The needle on the rear carb was corroded so a bit of steel wool fixed that, and some readjustment of the choke cables as it was running partial choke. Now revs easily to 6000 but still needs timing and carb balance set. Quote
zeds4ever Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 Good news mate,so you had no probs with the soldering I gather. LOL. Regards: Alan. Quote
aegean Posted April 3, 2011 Author Posted April 3, 2011 I used the original wires from your switch, plus the connecting wires that were in situ, joined those together and cut and soldered new wires in where I cut them off and which are now hidden. Quote
Sirpent Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 Good to see your problem was solved, got to love this forum Quote
