Hi guys

thinking of installing the flares on my 240z. besides drilliling the car (OUCH) are there any other mods ie cutting the wheel arches etc...

Sulio like how your car looks.its just mad. perfect balance all goes nicely together. you have any pics and what did u do to the body to install the flares.

I can live with the holes but not so with cutting guards and arches which i believe datsun didnt do eaither.

how low is your car? any info wil be good on your setup.ie how u installed the flares and what size rims and offset and profile tyres.

I am still to cut the flares. I would have done it ages ago but I've been busy renovating my home so my cars at my folks place til I build a garage. Yer, your on the money, drill holes, cut original guards, weld them up and done. I'm able to drive the car as is but it rubs over bumps at speed. I'm using what I think is Super Low King Springs. When I cut the guards I'm gonna have a good think about going lower and how to achieve that wether it be coil overs or even lower springs!???

I dropped in to a distributor of ROH wheels with Evan and we ordered a set like mine for his car although he asked for black centers. He's got his flares and I believe he gets his wheels late Jan or early Feb so if you want to get your arches done we are looking for a good place to do em, economy in numbers hey!

Theres a good thread with photos on how to do it all here and the link below has got info on the rim/tyre config I went with. Can't remember what it was off the top of my head atm.

*EDIT: Just realised your in Adelaide, Oh well try and get it done for the Nationals and come to Melb.

yep :D will look hot, get a fair few looks and points in the zed in the city and peak hour, i imagine it will b even more so with some fat rims on it

talking to some of the guys i work with a few of them have done engine conversions and all play with welding bits and pieces together (one has an ra28 celica with door poppers), so i should see what welders we have there if any and if any of them would be happy giving it a shot, i'll show them that link :D, as we have a drive in workshop

i'm only having a few days off over christmas, so i dont think i'll be able to ask any shops around my place :(

with one of the fender rollers do you think you could bend the flares up enough to sit just under the flares? i'm guessing it would break the weld so need to be re-welded anyway, but atleast that way u could bend it back if u ever really wanted? or i guess u could cut the peice off as nicely as possible and just weld it back on if ever needed?

OUCH i was afraid of that. i dont mind cutting the front i got 2 sets but cutting rear 1/4 panels im little bit hesitant. ie if i ever want to return it back to stock look at any stage.

so did JDM ZG have special 1/4 panels fitted or they hacked it with a metal cutter? or did they just add them without cutting.

still have to think about it now. not that eager to chop the rear 1/4 wheel arches.

yeah im in adelaide. i would have done the job myself got all the tools and not afraid to use them. but was wondering if they were ways around it without cutting. though logicaly thinking about it i didnt see it happening without chop chop. or i just have to settle for the normal body shape and max width wheels to suit. but i do like the look of the zg flares. GRRRRR

will come to melbourne with my 2+2 when its completed hopefully before the next natianals hope its few month away. will have solid week over xmass working on it so hopefully most gets done by then.

the 240z will be my next big project car when i move out of my parents place. building a fully equiped workshop on my property with a new house next few months or so than i can attack it properly in my spare time. getting my miss to give me a hand with this one but collecting bits on the way as i just want to get on with the work when time comes instead of chassing parts.

very divided on how to do this one.

1. stockish old schoolish

2. oldschool

3 rb26det transplant with all the goodies but kinda reversable if needed.

thanks for your help guys ..........damn cutting

so you dont think if u did cut them off you woudl be able to reweld them on and make it look normal again? sure i know that the underneath would b different but you woudlnt' b able to see it.

my thought is if anything could go for some moulded in sutle flares if i wanted to go for a stock look ever again.

reading somewhere i read that the factory cars had their guards cut, and there is some fold in the inner fender? and it just continues straight instead of folding down or something? i might be in the later stages of the hybridz thread

Yer I've always thought that Evan, but the question never gets answered. Of coarse you can go back by welding them in. If you can unstitch the whole roof and weld in a new one then welding guards back in must be easily done also, well maybe not easily but my guess is verfy doable. Thing is I can't see myself wanting to remove the flares I just like that fat look too much and lets face it, it's been around for as long as the car as other wise you would'nt have ZG model!

Funny story about a member here that was so worried about his 260z 2 seater getting scratched as it was in very nice condition that he felt he had to sell the car. He did so and the car ended up being converted to a Ferrari kit car! Ha enjoy your car which ever way you like it!

TRUE Sulio. i mean thats silly selling ht car cause u worried about scratches. pitty its been transformed into something that it never be. it was probably worth more as a z than a copy of a ferrari.

though mine sits low now and looks good but i wanted some nice deep dish rims. plus yours looks sick so i may think about it for the time being. see which looks the miss preffers but if im installing rb26 than flares are on i need big rubber at the back. so if i need choping chopping it is.

dont plan to sell it and i dont believe in stock cars so....... anything is possible.

it all rest on the condition of the l28 n42/n42 settup with dual carbs. apperently has a bigger cam and some head work. does have extractors but the head gasket is gone. after assesing the damage than the faith wll be sealed. either retro or full mod

got to get my new garage made first before anything gets touched on the 240z.

if you like the height i've got mine at you might be able to run it with really hard springs at rear and get away with only the occasional rub. I've heard that is what some of the guys in Japan do but it sounds a bit dodgy to me and besides a little lower would look even better. Having said that the height i'm at now is reaaly practical as it never scrapes underneath anywhere!
