260DET Posted November 6, 2010 Posted November 6, 2010 Anyone getting 400hp out of their L series in this country? Link to a standard bodied no extra aero S30 in the US which recently did 173mph at Bonneville http://forums.hybridz.org/index.php/topic/95138-new-240z-coupe-record-at-bonneville/ How much power would it take to push a S30 to that speed? Incredible. Its said that there is at least one engine builder (Rebello) in the US who for US$8000 will turn your L series into a 400hp monster. Quote
Brabham Posted November 6, 2010 Posted November 6, 2010 The group Sc guys here are getting upwards of 300HP with twin hitachi's in their '74 260Z's. Given an L28 or a stroker, you might get close to that here. Add a G nose and you might get close to 185 mph. Quote
luvemfast Posted November 6, 2010 Posted November 6, 2010 for US$8000 will turn your L series into a 400hp monster. Thats pretty good Worth sending one accross for that price Quote
PZG302 Posted November 6, 2010 Posted November 6, 2010 I'd hate to think what the maintenance schedule and costs would be on a 400hp L series The $120 oil changes on my race motor with the 20 or so events between rebuilds is scary enough for me.......... Quote
peter mc Posted November 6, 2010 Posted November 6, 2010 I no of a 260z that did 310km one night and it had 400kwatw .that is one fast na L series well done to them. g nose is a must at speed the front wheels get real light after 150mph Quote
DatPilot Posted November 7, 2010 Posted November 7, 2010 I know of a L24e with 270cc injectors , stock exhaust. 210km/h then thats it... Quote
Whittie Posted November 8, 2010 Posted November 8, 2010 I thought Rebello's top package was about $30,000...... I've done 153mph in my zed. I'd call it a stock body. 180RWHP. How much to get to 173mph? probably about 220RWHP. Of course it depends how much time and distance you have to do it in as I wasn't flatout at that speed, just ran out of room. The car that did 172MPH is on the Rebello website, it ran their 3L engine. It had headlight covers otherwise purely stock, I have front and rear spoiler, so doesn't quite count.... Quote from there webiste for a 360HP 3.2L: The "Big-Bore" 3.2 Z-Car Using the diesel crankshaft and special block preparation this long rod combination is a real torque monster. With cylinder head work, cam and an induction/exhaust system, it produces 320+ HP / 300+ lbs torque. Add tripple carbs and get 365 HP / 300 lbs torque. This engine is sold ONLY as a complete assembly. Includes block, crank and rod cores. Customer supplies cylinder head. I rekon that'll cost a fair bit more than 8k!! The real kicker is that they won't tell you what they did, you just pay the money and give them a cylinder head and they provide you with the motor. Probably so you can't steal their ideas, but still, I'd rather know what was done then just pay blindly. Quote
Roberto Posted November 8, 2010 Posted November 8, 2010 Rebello's 3.2L package is $15,000. This is for the engine, triples, distributor, HD clutch, race header and dyno tuned. $1000 extra for ITB's. I have an itemized quote from him that tells you exactly what you are paying for. It is very detailed. If you like, i can send it to you, or should I just post it? I don't think he would mind. The secret is in the head porting, not the list of components. Quote
Whittie Posted November 8, 2010 Posted November 8, 2010 The secret is in the head porting, not the list of components. This is the bit everyone wants to know tho That, and what ever it is they do to the block and crank, as I've heard a fair bit of time goes in to that as well. Quote
peter mc Posted November 8, 2010 Posted November 8, 2010 my best l28 with 88mm pistons made 340hp atfw so it is possible there stroker is making close to 400hp .there 86mm stroke and 90mm bore 55mm webers or injected with 630th cams with 310 deg and 14to1 compresion so they should go pretty good. Scando Posted November 8, 2010 Posted November 8, 2010 At Phillip Island last year I was running 255/40 17 tyres, a 3.54 diff, with a 0.759 5th gear and was hitting the 6,300rpm limiter. The speed calculators on the net tell me this is 278kmh which works out about spot on the 173mph they got. I was only running 15psi there so I would have had about 220rwkw which would be somewhere around 400hp at the flywheel, maybe a bit less? The car was still accelerating when it hit the limiter but the last part of the straight there is down hill so I'm not sure if it would have done it on the flat. It's a bit different comparing a 400hp turbo engine to a 400hp n/a engine too due to the different torque curves. Quote
peter mc Posted November 9, 2010 Posted November 9, 2010 and it looked great going through turn one Scando Quote
260DET Posted November 9, 2010 Author Posted November 9, 2010 Friend of mine is getting a NA big revving L series built as distinct from the usual slower revving stroker, going to be interesting. Quote
peter mc Posted November 9, 2010 Posted November 9, 2010 you would be wrong in thinking these strokers don't rev because they do! They are fully counter weighted with Honda journal beerings and rods that are very light weight short skirt pistons in Japan they rev them to 10k rpm with lots of Nos and run them deep into the 10 sec with manual trans. Quote
Ben Posted November 9, 2010 Posted November 9, 2010 HPI Volume 5 or 6 has an atmo 280ZX drag car that SCREAMS to a 10 over the 1/4. Who knows how long they last in that trim though! Quote
Scando Posted November 9, 2010 Posted November 9, 2010 and it looked great going through turn one Scando Thanks Wouldn't know anybody with any pics by any chance would you? The ones the main photographer got from the event were a bit average...... Quote
260DET Posted November 9, 2010 Author Posted November 9, 2010 Yeh I know the Japs do all sorts of things but the topic is about L's in AU and as far as I know the strokers here use basically stock cranks and are relatively low revvers, say 6.5K. Or is that incorrect? And noone seriously drag races a L engine here do they? Quote
peter mc Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 i have one of these cranks in my car. 86mm and very light i hope to rev it very hard Quote
ozconnection Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 i have one of these cranks in my car. 86mm and very light i hope to rev it very hard Where did you get this crank from, cost and do you have any pics? How did you clear the bottom end from banging into the skirts on the block? Any info on your rod lengths, and pin height on your ?custom pistons. What of your rod/stroke ratio? Sorry for the questions mate, sounds like a "very special" engine indeed. Quote
peter mc Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 Hi, the crank is a billet made in Melbourne and it cost $5500 it has Honda bearings the rods are custom and cost 2200 and weigh 480g. pistons are custom sps in Melbourne gudgeon runs through oil rail .the cr is 8.9 at the moment new head on the way. i am being vague at the moment will give more specs when i have the dyno results and i no it stays together Quote
260DET Posted November 11, 2010 Author Posted November 11, 2010 Link to that project http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php/topic,7802.0.html Quote
