i ran out of petrol just now, ran to the petrol station and got like 15 litres, but the car wouldnt start!!! i kept cranking it over, but still nothing. could i have like an air hole in there or something?! what should i do. i never had a car with carbies, so have no idea what to do. its a twin carb setup with a red cover on the side.

all help appreciated. Vlad

There are many possibilities.

You might want to try and give the engine a helping hand by spraying some fuel or aerostart directly into the carbies to get it going and help the fuel to get sucked through.

Other than that you could start by checking if the fuel is getting to the carbies by pulling a hose off from the fuel pump to the carbies and see if fuel is coming through while you crank it over.

If that is OK then it should be a matter of the float bowls filling as you crank it over.

If you are not getting any fuel you could have air in the line from the tank so maybe you can pull the hose off before it goes to the fuel pump and see if you can suck some fuel through.

By running it dry you may have picked all the crap in the bottom of the tank and block the fuel filter but doing some of the above will determine than.

Good luck

Vlad have you got a mechanical fuel pump? You can see the fuel pump in front of the spark plugs hanging off the engine. It's attached to the timing chain just below the valve cover.

If so you may need to crank it over for a while to get the fuel coming up the lines. It can take a while for the engine to kick over after running out of fuel because of the air in the lines.

As Warren said running the tank dry has the potential of picking up the crap in the bottom of the tank. So check your fuel filter, remove it if neccessary and try blowing on it if you don't feel any air coming through the other end it's blocked up.

Good luck!

PS: What petrol station is it stuck at? I need some spare parts

ended up calling RACV. he only had to put petrol directly in the bowls and that got her going. Spraystart didnt work for me though!

ah well, another lesson learnt! :)
