Spartan Warrior Posted August 29, 2010 Posted August 29, 2010 Not sure where to post this but now in Canberra after leaving the Top End! After a bad accident I have not been able to drive my car for almost two years with a tour overseas last year as well. My 260 2+2 started a couple of months ago but she will not start now, as much as I turn her over. I will be moving house in a weeks time and need to get her started so I can get her on the trailer, any help or suggestions would be very much appreciated, thank you Quote
Spartan Warrior Posted August 29, 2010 Author Posted August 29, 2010 Salty thank you, i have checked fuel to the carbs on both sides and there is fuel there, I have some of that start spray and the car almost starts and then just turns over? Quote
Spartan Warrior Posted August 29, 2010 Author Posted August 29, 2010 chris I am in Jerrabomberra, cheers Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted August 29, 2010 Moderators Posted August 29, 2010 If the car has just been started then stopped over and over without being driven, I'd say plugs will be fouled. When that happens there is virtually no spark then when you try to start, it floods very easily. Remove the plugs, with a fine wire brush give them a good clean the try again. Make sure they are not wet with fuel; it helps to get the plug ends hot over a gas burner so when more fuel lands on the plugs, it quickly evaporates off. Quote
Spartan Warrior Posted August 29, 2010 Author Posted August 29, 2010 Zedman240 Thank you, I will try your advice and update on my progress, cheers Quote

Spartan Warrior Posted August 29, 2010 Author Posted August 29, 2010 Salty Cheers, update, plugs cleaned, fuel checked and flowing, car will start for a few seconds and then it will cut out, it does not seem to want to catch Quote
Spartan Warrior Posted August 29, 2010 Author Posted August 29, 2010 Salty Not really it is very lumpy and runs for about ten seconds and will not respond to the accelerator at all, cheers Quote
Spartan Warrior Posted August 29, 2010 Author Posted August 29, 2010 Salty Thank you, I will have to ask someone to help, so can anybody in Canberra recommend a mobile mechanic or be willing to help, thank you Quote
Spartan Warrior Posted August 29, 2010 Author Posted August 29, 2010 Salty Thank you, I will try that as well, I suspect that I will need some help, cheers Quote
chris240 Posted August 29, 2010 Posted August 29, 2010 hmmm sounds like time is precious...so , if its giving you grief, get it towed to Bruce at performance plus in Silva ave Queanbeyan ...call Daniel from ALT tilt towing on 0412483881, tell him its a cashie and he should charge around $70...then Bruce will fix everything. I tilt-towed mine to Bruce a few months back when I got held up at work & couldnt get away....best $70 I ever spent.. Quote
Spartan Warrior Posted August 29, 2010 Author Posted August 29, 2010 Chris thank you, will give that a go Quote
Spartan Warrior Posted August 30, 2010 Author Posted August 30, 2010 Update on issue, checked fuel in bowls and all good, charged battery, cleaned plugs, car will start run lumpy for slightly longer 10 - 15 seconds and then cuts out, do you think that a bump start will work? Cheers Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted August 30, 2010 Moderators Posted August 30, 2010 I think those flat top carbs have well and truly shat themselves... Quote
zaxzeds Posted September 1, 2010 Posted September 1, 2010 Hi, when you turn on the ignition, light on dash, you should here a fant clicking buzz at the right hand rear of the car (electric fuel pump). Then just pull a spark plug lead off at the spark plug and push the metal connector out of the plug end and hold it a few millimeters from the cam cover (top of engine) and turn the engine over, if you see a small pulsing spark (flash) you have spark. If the car runs for 10 seconds as you say, all should be easy. Make sure that when you pull the choke cable on in the cabin that both chokes are closing on the carbies (the cables will pull the small levers between the carbies and the engine up) if not just pull them up manually at the carbies with you finger. If the car starts you can leave them like this for a few minutes without touching the throttle and then gradually push them down as the car warms up. When the car cuts out does it happen when you touch the throttle? If so just let it run longer, dont think that a good rev will somehow clear its throat, if it runs for 10-15 seconds just persist doing this several times. Its actually a good thing as it gives oil a chance to fill the galleries and revisit places it hasn't been for a while. N.B. When chokes are closed it reduces the airflow to the engine and hence increases fuel ratio helping with cold start, thats why it wont accelerate as it then starves for air as it is getting too much fuel. Let me know how you go. Quote
Spartan Warrior Posted September 1, 2010 Author Posted September 1, 2010 zaxzeds thank you very much I appreciate that and will try at the end of this week when I get back, will let you know how I go Cheers Quote
