skipz Posted August 22, 2010 Posted August 22, 2010 Not too sure if I should revive an old thread or start a new one...just an idea regardless. Haven't tried this. Regarding speedhut gauges and dim or unlit needles, has anyone here tried using a "gaseous tritium light source" (GTLS)? These light sources come in small diameter tubes of varying lengths that one might be able to fashion onto the gauge needle and get around the use of UV paint/bulbs. I think the military use them on sights and such. The tubes last for ~15-25 years, but I'm not too sure of the actual light output and how bright they are. Not too sure of cost either - probably more than a UV bulb and paint, but they'll last longer. I might be giving this a go at some point (if speedhut faces are the go, and if I can custom prototype/mould some needles to suit), but just thought I'd post the idea if someone else was keen to try. See <http://www.mbmicrotec.com/html/engl/produkte/lichter.html> (sorry haven't figured out how to embed links yet) Skip Quote
stevo_gj Posted August 22, 2010 Posted August 22, 2010 Hey mate, I like what I'm reading. I'm too short on time nowadays to attempt such a project but I will be VERY keen to hear how it goes if you decide to take this route. If it does end up working theres an excellent chance I'll follow in your footsteps! The UV solution didn't really work out that well for me. Looking forward to hearing more! Stephen Quote
nizm0zed Posted August 22, 2010 Posted August 22, 2010 Are trigalight® freely available for purchase? No, due to the radioactive nature of the light sources, licensing is usually required in order to purchase trigalight. Nevertheless, we shall gladly provide you with the necessary assistance associated with the application for such permits. You could have some issues with that. there will more than likely be some hurdles getting radioactive substances through customs. Quote
620Z Posted August 22, 2010 Posted August 22, 2010 Well I am about to send off my order in the next few weeks to "Speedhut" for 7 guages at over $1,000- to be mounted in my Zed. I love the GPS speedometers (Records qtr mile times, top speeds in a run and more) plus the Tacho's with shift lights etc. These will help transform the car into the 20th century and give me clear accurate readings of other stuff. So I am going the whole hog. Can't wait and I am sure the wife will be thrilled. Not! Quote
