Hi guys,

not sure if I am doing this correctly or not.

I have taken the tailshaft out of my car to get new unis on it and to get it balanced. I had to drop the front diff mount to get close to being able to unbolt the tailshaft.

After doing this, it was still really difficult to get in to undo the bolts connecting the tailshaft to the diff.

I'm concerned that when I reinstall it, I may not be able to get the bolts tight enough.

Has anyone found a way to do these up more easily than the way I have described?

cheers

I have done this a few times, never had to drop the diff mount though, just the sway bar. IIRC correctly you need a double ended ring spanner, one with the S shape that lets you hold the nut squarely, from around the front diff mount.

First time is always a prick, you get better at it, fear not. :)

Most frustrating thing I remember about getting it back in with the diff mount on was trying to get the nuts started. Holding the washer + nut in that small space between two fingers then having to spin them, didn't wanna happen. Persistence is the key. :)

Good luck,

thanks Dave,

I had a collection of 12mm spanners trying different approaches (but didn't have a S shaped one)

Does it matter which way the bolts face, as it looks like they would be easier to do up if they were inserted thread facing forward towards the engine?

thanks for your help

cheers

id say NO, push the bolts in threads facing back of the car as the hex on the bolt head locks in against one of its flats against a raised section on the tailshafts.

I use a slightly smaller spanner and use it on the nut only, put the trans in neutral and use a large screwdriver in the uni to rotate. works a treat.

Also i find that you dont need to do the bolts up ridiculously tight either, just enough to fully compress the spring washer then say another 60 deg's no more..... Ive never had one come undone!!!!
