Hi Guys,

I am a noob when it comes to car respraying etc.

I am going to spray the car in Acrylic as this is my first time round.

What I want to know is, how many litres of paint primer etc will I need. What sort of sandpaper and how much of it should I get. What other sorts of things do I need as well as paint ei. thinners etc.

Any help would really be appreciated.

Yes, you can just use GP thinners for both, if you start using ACLAC or something like it for the top coat you take some risks in lifting your primer, especially if the weather is a little cool.  Remember if you're spraying metallic don't forget to factor in clear coat, actually I think you are better putting some clear coat even over solid colors as it allows you to do a good color sand before you cut.  The only thing I'd challenge is leave your paintwork a little longer that a day before you color sand and machine cut, this allows for the solvents to evaporate and give you a harder finish.

50/50 mix sounds a bit thick do you put it on with a primer tip? i have alway done 1/3 paint 2/3 thinners. Obviously you have got this to work for you but this is the mix that my boss uses and also what i got taught in trade school ?

Ahhh maybe I should have red it a bit better, I was in a hurry

I have been restoring cars for decades but I only recently acquired my apprenichip as a panel beater for reasons if starting my own resto buissinuss and doing it properly.

What colour you doing it?

I'll be looking at a white paint job soon.

I'm still deciding between jet black, midnight blue or velocity yellow. The guy at the paint shop said I should stay away from the dark colours for my first time.

the other thing is my brother has 3M primer and paint and motospray paint sitting in his shed unused. Are these any good? Is there a massive difference between acrylic paints?

nah I wasn't going to mix, I was just going to go out and buy the other stuff i needed in the same brand if these were any good.

My brother bought them a few months ago as he was going to do a project car, but then he gave up on it.

when it comes to primers, what sort should I use?

etch primer or primer filler. Is there different applications for each?

There's also that kill rust stuff I guess as well.
