dont see why not you would need to weld a nut under the body for the bolt to go into other than that i would presume it would be fine.

Don't forget an engineers cert too. They really don't like you playing with seat belt mounts.

Pretty sure you can't use welded connections in seat belt / seat mounts either

Existing S30 seat belts are a square nut welded to the transmission tunnel. On the out/underside of the car though.

Perhaps that is how they got away with it, by saying the weld was just locating the nut.

sorry thats what i was refering too my 260z 2+2 has belts mounted to the trans tunnel i dont see why you couldnt do the same with a 280zx just do me a favour and check the steel cable that holds the belt buckle to the fixing point as both mine had snapped and where just holding on by a strand.

I think the issue is if you have to "make up" the thing it bolts into. Think about a 100kg driver in a head on at 100kph. One of our physics minded people might be able to work out the forces on the seatbelt mounts. Then add in dodgy weld jobs etc. I would find an engineer who would engineer it first, then design it the way he suggests. I had trouble finding someone to approve my racing harness, the last call i made to QLD transport they said it's actually impossible to get them approved. But I think it might be one of those depends on who you talk to situations

Need more info to calculate forces. If anyone has access to automotive design standards then we could probably work out what forces it needs to be able to withstand. I could run an FEA on a particular design with those forces.

Probably easier to grab the tensile and shear capacity of the original bolt (M12 maybe?) and make sure your bracket exceeds that.

I'm sure seat belt bolts are 7/16 UNF High Tensile but not 100%. I'll check and update post if it is different. I have a collection of them at home so  I can make sure.

You might be right Zedman....a 10mm bolt which is a little smaller than 7/16 screws in just a bit too easily

 

A quick story; I owned a Cortina once, the seat belts were ok, but the driver seat worked it's way through the floor, stock standard, how it was from the factory...I had to remove seat, repair torn floor then made up 2mm thick gal steel reinforcing plates 8" by 8" and bolt seat back in....never owner a ford since

I was helping my brother in law clean up a mid 80s telstar/626, same thing. Rear mounts on drivers seat had punched clean through the bracket. He was adament that he hadn't done anything (too) stupid in it. I was amazed, and scared at the same time.

"stock standard, how it was from the factory"...correction - lol I just realized, the torn floor wasn't done in the factory...but I bought the car new and after about 4 yrs the seat was leaning over to one side, couldn't figure it out so investigated and that's when I sprung the weak single layer sheet metal floor the seat was bolted too, that's why it was so easy to fit large flat reinforcing plates

 

I just tried a 7/16" fine thread tap in my seat belt top anchor hole and it screws in ok, a bit firm but could be the Taiwanese tap

It would be worth talking to an engineer from your state first.

 

To bolt my harness in we used 100mmx75mm steel plates between the nut and the floorpan on each mounting point as is required as per the CAMS manual.

My car has been engineer approved since with the harness.
