Rebuilt Gearbox Swap - Any special requirements?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys

So on Monday Shaun and I are going to replace my current noisy 5spd with a rebuilt 5spd purchased from Timwell. The box has a VL main shaft and S13/14 gears with a double synchro on 2nd. Shaun has had a lot of experience swapping gearboxes and he will be more or less running the show. This thread has the details of the box: http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php/topic,6580.0.html

I was wondering if there are special requirements for gearboxes like the one we are installing and whether there is anything 'special' we should do compared to installing another 260z box. The gearbox has 0 km on it since it was rebuilt.

Cheers,

Steve

So we did the swap today and it went well on the whole. Everything was simple to swap into the rebuilt box except when it came time to bolt on the starter motor. The holes in the bell housing for the starter motor bolts are larger than the bolts I had previously which means I'm going to have to source some larger bolts from a specialty store and drill out the bolt holes on the starter motor itself to accommodate them.

I'm pretty sure its an L series bell housing, so is it possible the later models had different size of bolts? If so does anyone know what this size would be? I can't drive the car to the store to check so I'm going to have to buy a few sets and try them out when I get home.

I am reasonably sure all the bolts were the same. More likely they modified it to use another starter that used bigger bolts. If it helps I have buckets of bolts you can try. They are very valuable bolts though so I want them back ;)

From memory the starter motor bolts were two different lengths.. I'm thinking they were a different thread pitch being a metric fine. I can find out when I get home this arvo. M12 is the diameter anyway.

I think the holes have been tapped out to fit a different starter like Greg said. The long and short bolts can both be pushed right into the thread without any binding.

The bellhousing was also slightly different at the bottom where the two small bolts go through that metal sandwich plate. One side had a bit more meat on it meaning the old bolt wouldn't fit through. Not vital and easily fixed, just another difference.

The old box had L2 on the bellhousing from memory and 47 on the part that the shifter sits in. The new box had L1 on the bellhousing and 45 on the shifter part. The oil filler was on the passenger side of both boxes.

Other differences where that the securing tab for the speedo sender was below the sender on the old box (L2) and above the box on the new one (L1). This again isn't a problem as the same tab can screw in there, just another difference.
