Moustache bar

I think my moustach bar has had its day.After undoing the front diff mount that was broken I got to see how much movement there is in the moustache and its a lot.I spose these cars are strong and well engineered but a v8 implant has consequences.Ive been looking at a replacement in the aftermarket scene aloy ,steel etc.Does any one have any experience with these.Spoke to robco and he has seen a warped alloy one but I dont know in what application.Also couldnt find afront rubber diff mount as they are obsolete here in oz Repco, nissan etc.Got a price from a reputable dealer here of $165 and nearly fell over.Got a genuine from usa for $100 and I reckon thats a rip.

Hmmm If you are willing to mod your car try the rear diff mount from an Impressa (not just the WRX) Their diff mount will bolt straight on to our diffs (so long as you have an R180) then you just need to bolt the mount through the  underside of your floor.  But being a V8 I suspect you are running an R200?

Yes im running a r200 lsd.I think I may have cured the front problem[mount] its more the rear,moustache bar.Those font solid mounts work but arent to good for the street so ive read,but thanks.

im running arizona z car moustache bar seems to work fine so far like all of daves parts not cheap but well made http://www.arizonazcar.com/diffmount.html

also bought there front mount like one shown above but it worries me having hp i have since i saw pics of how easy they can pull that one bolt out of mount

will be changing to ron tyler style mount in near future may even use two together to be sure

The Ron Tyler mount with the proper urethane mount can't be beat. Energy (?) do a locally supplied mount that is the same as the GM mount. It's not cheap at about $100, but well worth the conversion.

 

I went for a few strips of Clark Rubber between the two folds of the leather strap. Granted, 230Nm is not likely to break leather, so it should work.

 

I was at the drags and a failed front mount (no rubber stripped up leather) caused the moustache bar to fail. If you consider the twisting movement allowed by the Ron Tyler mount on the moustache bar, even if the urethane mount fails (unlikely), the moustache bar should be able to handle it.

Zed 240au is yours the full piece one or the one with holes.As on his website theres a car on a hoist and the bar has holes and the other bars are a solid piece with recess.Also how did you contact him as his email wont work.

I am inclined to agree with Whittie. I have a Ron Tyler front diff mount and it is awesome. There is no movement in my diff at the front. I had a custom made moustache bar made up (Refer my Gallery) and it cracked after vibration over a period of time. Mind you I did question the design at the time MPC made it up. So Chrome Molly is out. I put back in my old bar and no problems. You really need a bit of flex at the rear I reckon. I question the Alloy Arizona one. They look great but not sure the metal screws won't vibrate lose when screwed into the Alloy Bar. So I have not gone down that route. Might be OK but not convinced. Fix your front and you should be OK regardless of how much power you have.

mine is the full one piece got it before he started cutting holes in them was one of the earlier designs he did

Thanks guys will work something out,vinny has a reinforced one Ill give a go and with the tyler mount from what craig has said should be apples,but if not may give the arizona bar a go.Just ordered the energy suspension kit so new bushes in nolathene should help too.

i wonder if the azc ally bar has helicoil inserts un the blocks where it is bolted, the threads of this would be a serious problem in my opinion.

Aluminium is normally useless for any real situation, UNLESS...(before all naysayers get in) You Continuously do NDT (non-destructive testing like xray, dye penetrant or ultrasonic) inspections of all items and do not exceed, maximum loading in ANY instances. Its just not any good for where strength and longevity is required in a cyclic fashion ie vibration, gearshifts and the like.

 

The stockie bars are made from a heat treated SPRING STEEL, look up strength values of this before attempting to make one yourself as for every multiple weaker your material is, is the same multiple thicker, wider, taller etc etc,

 

am i ranting.......Bottom line if youre not SURE find out for certain and maybe leave the design and the like of fabrication to those that do know. Just a word of warning, last thing you need is the diff breaking loose and panel beating the underside of your car and possibly the road.

No, they do not have helicoils.

 

Dave wouldn't sell them seperately so I got them direct from the manufacturer. http://www.nosms.com/ They weren't too dear, so if they don't last at least I have a sample from which to make a steel pair.

 

Note: The moustache bar in the photo is for mock-up purposes only. I intend to use 25x50 tube with inserts where bolts pass through.
