Daalp1 Posted August 23, 2006 Posted August 23, 2006 Hey fellas, This is really continued from my other post but I thought it should be a new topic. Basically I have a 1971 240z with the vynil, pull back sunroof (see below) but it is in very bad condition, hence an alternative is needed. I originally thought a tinted glass could be fitted in place; but have been told that this is not possible due to the size of the opening; I would like to know what others have done in this situation and what costs have been incurred respectively. Cheers  Quote
djc2004 Posted August 23, 2006 Posted August 23, 2006 Webasto made these vinyl sunroofs orginally (i think they came from England). they have a huge opening in the roof, but are a bit ugly when folded open. There must be people around who can repair them if you want to keep it. otherwise it sounds like its a roof replacement.... Lindsay at Z shop can advise you - he has the parts and skill to remove and replace your roof. Check these out for information http://www.webasto.com.au http://www.sunroofcentre.com.au Quote
JP240z Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 I just had my roof replaced through lindsay at zshop for $1500 which included a respray. Looks perfect and is so much better to have the car original than have a hole in the roof. I don't think it is possible to just fill the hole up with sheet metal as the curve of the roof is impossible to keep with the heat of the welding distorting it. I would expect the best price for a new roof installed would be around $900-1000. Cheers, Jack. Quote
zr240 Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 yer jack that sounds right. I think 1500 is pretty good. you have to unpick all those damb spot welds and stuff around to fit a new roof so nothing better than getting it done properly . Ash Quote
Natez Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 damn 1500, i woulda bought a few differant Z cars if i knew it was that cheap to get a new roof skin, oh well Quote
JP240z Posted August 25, 2006 Posted August 25, 2006 Yeah, I thought $1500 was very reasonable considering the quality of the work that zshop do, although I cant say that I am too happy with the experinece. After waiting 8 weeks for a job that was meant to take 10 days, my windscreen was broken after only being in the car for a month, chrome strips around the window were misplaced and bent, and only found out today that they have taken some new rubber stops of my hatch area and must still have them, but the quality of their work is awesome, great sprayjob too. But yeah, $1500 is okay considering a smaller vynil sunroof is $1700. Cheers, Jack. Quote
zedevan Posted August 25, 2006 Posted August 25, 2006 they would of payed for the windscreen though since it was their fault yeah? Quote
JP240z Posted August 26, 2006 Posted August 26, 2006 Nah, no one covers windscreen breakages through fitting etc. Luckily I ensured my car as a restoration with Shannons for around $100 and that gave me a free windscreen every year, so pretty much pays itself off. Quote
