crossmember spacers

Some of you might already know I have a half finished project car. It is a 280zx series 2 with a VH45 (infinity V8) attached to a Supra 6 speed box. I am wanting to get some momentum again.

 

One of the challenges is the height of the engine. It protrudes through the bonnet by about 1 inch. A friend of mine told me there are kits for Commodores to allow larger engines under the hood. They use a spacer between the front crossmember and the chassis rails.

 

I was going to modify a bonnet to fit the engine. But I would much much much rather keep the car looking stock (to be a sleeper)

 

I am just wondering:

1.Does anyone know a workshop that will make them?

2.What sort of space can I introduce before they would become unstable/weak?

3.Any other suggestions or comments are also welcome.

Greg, being a "four" cylinder length motor, and if it set as far back, and as low as possible, using say some sort of custom fabricated engine mounts that maybe come off the, for instance, alternator to block bracket mount faces, and aircon to block mount faces, and ensuring clearence to sump/crossmember and bottom pulley, it may clear the bonnet.

If you are using the stock block to chassis mount faces it will put the motor more forward in the bay, and maybe it sits higher?

If you are to use the stock block mount faces, consider some lower custom brackets, and as well, use a spacer plate , as you are enquiring about, between crossmember and rails, say 50mm wide x 140mm long by say 20mm thick, in a 60601 alloy, and use longer bolts.

Just a thought.

Gotta watch hanging a motor off of the front, it puts big strain on block to box assy and box mount. Harmonics at rpm could be a problem. Nissan spends time and effort on "noise" nowadays.

 

260DET has done a custom intake plenum, 9 more to do with airflow than clearance) maybe look at top of motor items ie airbox/plenum design.

In the jags that run book for fitting chev 350 into 240 , 260 z they recomend placing 10 mm plate between cross member and chassis rail this is to lower engine a little as well as to help with bump steer

plate is steel cut to match top of cross member where it bolts to cross member

20mm either side lengthways wouldnt hurt, it would help distribute any stresses too.

galerdi, contact me re this, I have my vh45 sitting under the stock hood of my 240z, a few tricks you should know first.

be carefull of ground clearance from sump and crossmember, as your probly not going to want to lower either of these, only in a pinch.
