Kent Posted December 21, 2009 Posted December 21, 2009 Hi Guys, i need to get my hands on some parts for a 240z (series 2) steering column. I have the lower joint shaft that goes from the steering rack, and i also have what seems to be a complete steering column without the lower steering shaft (pic attached) so, from what i can make out, I am after the rubber coupler assembly (with the stopping plates and all hardware) and the lower steering shaft (presuming it is a press fit into the top half of the shaft) i am in sydney, but willing to pay postage does anyone know if the 260z or 2+2 ones are the same? Thanks Kent Quote
RB30X Posted December 21, 2009 Posted December 21, 2009 I would have what you are looking for assuming that 260Z's are the same. An expert opinion would be required though. Quote
Huw Posted December 21, 2009 Posted December 21, 2009 Correct me if I am wrong....I haven't spent any time on 260Z's but I believe they were written up for having a better steering system (shame about being tubby)...which I assume would mean the linkage differs.... but this is only a vague recollection from something i read over 4 years ago so.... Regarding the parts, there are several manufacturers (inc. Noltec in Sydney) who will produce the rubber coupler including metal bits for a 240Z. Can't help you on the shaft though. Huw Quote
Mr240z Posted December 21, 2009 Posted December 21, 2009 Noltec have been brought out by Whiteline.. Steering coupler part number is W11044 Thats consists of the big rubber bush, new bolts and spacers. They don't require the round metal plates in this set up. If you need the steering rack mount bush's the part number is W12075 that kit consists of 2 different size rack bush's, L & R side. If you have trouble finding them though your local parts shop send me a p.m I have a few sets in my stock.. Quote
. Posted December 21, 2009 Posted December 21, 2009 Just a side note if it is useful. I fitted a 280zx steering column to my 240z. It just needed an adaptor plate so it could be bolted under the dash. Apart from that it works great. Quote
MickyG Posted December 21, 2009 Posted December 21, 2009 Worst steering wheel cover in the world. Ever. Unfortunately I have nothing to add except being a smart arse. Hope you find the bits you need. Quote
Kent Posted February 2, 2010 Author Posted February 2, 2010 Just a side note if it is useful. I fitted a 280zx steering column to my 240z. Hi Gelderdi, did it change the angle of the steering shaft? i picked up a 260Z 2+2 shaft, but found that the angle of the plate that attaches to the firewall is at a greater angle, meaning the steering wheel would be a lot lower. it would have also required an adaptor plate.. if the 280zx has a better angle (ie. closer to standard, i will go for that instead Quote
. Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 from memory the angle was the same as the 240 but I did have to make an adaptor (flat steel plate) because the bolt holes did not line up. The bolt holes for the 240 were closer to the firewall. Quote
Kent Posted February 2, 2010 Author Posted February 2, 2010 excellent, will give that a shot. what did you end up replacing? was it all the way down to the steering box? any chance you got any pics Quote
. Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 I replaced down to the little rubber joint in the engine bay. The length was identical between the 240z and 280zx. No photos unfortunatly. You can actually bolt it straight in with no mods if you are willing to live with 2 bolts instead of 4. After all they only hold the column up off your knees. I guess the only risk is in an accident is 2 bolts enough to stop the column / steering wheel pushing your chest through your backside. But on the positive side the 280 column has a better collapse feature than the 240 column. Quote
Kent Posted February 2, 2010 Author Posted February 2, 2010 great that sounds perfect, it allows me to simply throw it in (presuming you don't have to redrill the firewall) to get the car atleast steering while pushing it around the driveway! thanks a billion. Quote
