redrbzed Posted November 27, 2009 Posted November 27, 2009 Finally got motivated to do some work on the car, started pulling the engine apart and took some pics. Spoke with my engine builder about what happened and says it's not uncommon on an RB26 track car that has over 300kW atw. Apparently the main bearing spins cutting off oil flow to the conrod and it seizes. Anyway, new engine build starting mid Jan. cheers, Sinisha Quote
260DET Posted December 16, 2009 Posted December 16, 2009 A lubrication problem has likely caused the bearing to spin in the first place. Those engines have some lubrication issues when they are raced but there are fixes available. Quote
Ben Posted December 17, 2009 Posted December 17, 2009 Would that have been an early (R32 vintage) RB26DETT? The oil pump was upgraded in the later engines. Tomei etc also do aftermarket ones which address the issue (the specifics of which I can't remember). Either way - that sucks! Quote
acdc-5 Posted December 17, 2009 Posted December 17, 2009 Yeah they tend to pump alot of oil into the head not leaving enough in the sump. Oil restrictors are your friend in these when raced, as you probably know Quote
zr240 Posted December 17, 2009 Posted December 17, 2009 Ouch! If you look on the bright side you wont need the dip stick to tell if you have oil in the sump anymore Hope my RB holds together on the track when I eventually get there. Ash Quote
620Z Posted December 17, 2009 Posted December 17, 2009 Ahhh Sinish. Looks a similar problem to when Ben blew his motor up a few months back. Once you start work in Jan some of that enthusiasm will return. Hide the receipts from the wife (If you can) and 6-12 months later with a few trouble free track days under your belt the pain of throwing a shit load of cash down the drain will fade and you will be back in the game. Good luck with it all. Looking forward to seeing the beast back on the road. Quote
