ok i cleaned out my carbies yesterday as i thort one of the jets might be blocked and just made problems worse so i sat and figured might be blocked fuel line checked and changed the fuel filter and there was about a shot glass of rust in the old one i havn't changed the fuel filter since ive had the car so the old filter could be as old as the hills. will draining the tank from the drain plug get most of the rust out? or am i goin to have to take the whole tank out? and can the rust do any damage to the car or is it just going to get caught in the filter until i get the same problem again?

Rip the tank out and use a fuel tank repair kit to get rid of the rust once and for all.

POR15 make a great kit that is done in basically a 2 stage process, the first cleans out all the rust and scale and the second lot of goop poured in seales the tanks so no new rust will form. From memory the cost was about $100 for the kit and pretty easy to do. I didi my Charger tanks with this and was even able to use it to repair a couple of small holes, about 5mm diameter, in the tank as well.

Damn, i wish i knew about that kit before i changed my fuel tank.. i had endless problems with me fuel lines getting clogged up.

I had a decent tank, only problem was i couldnt stop the leaking, so i got a second hand tank that was "in good condition" turned out it had bits of damn tissue paper all through it and stale fuel. Had about 2 months of NRMA having to come rescue me by blasting compressed air back through the lines to unblock the tissue garbage.

Had more troubles after i changed the tank then when it was leaking!

Yep I would be going for a replacement tank myself. Obviously check it and possibly treat it first. But it would want to be in better condition than what you have. Should be plenty of second hand ones around pretty cheap.

It may sound obvious but don't try cutting or welding your old tank even if you think its empty. Fuel vapor in a confined space could still kill or mame you.

If your fuel tank has rust its likely due to sitting for a long time. A fuel tank full of fuel is very unlikely to cause dramas the fuel prevents rust from starting.

What carbs are you running? If they are 260z flat tops junk em' after you replace the fuel tank and get a set of 240z carbs and rebuild them.

If you clogged up your fuel lines with rust and other junk. Your carbs could also have been contaminated and inhibit your flaots, needles and nozzles or even block your float chamber.

Hopefully not for you sake, but if she runs like crap after replacing the tank and fuel lines / filters well you know where to look next.

im running 3 screw belltop su's. the cars running better then it ever has since ive owned it anyways. im thinking ill wait till i go through this tank of fuel then take off and check the filter for rust if theres any in there ill have to flush the tank, theres no holes (had half tank after sitting for years) so im hoping the tank is still in ok nick just a bit rusty
