Azon Posted June 29, 2006 Posted June 29, 2006 We al know how hard it to find used wheels with correct offset, so I thinking of purchasing a set of wheels for a Nissan Sivia and want to use those with flares.... Well I found an interesting set with the right width - 8.5 fronts and 9.5 rears but with a really wrong offset +35 - it wont be safe to fit huge 51mm spacers would it  - stupid question I guess but there is always hope... PZG302 Posted June 29, 2006 Posted June 29, 2006 8.5 fronts and 9.5 rears but with a really wrong offset +35 - it wont be safe to fit huge 51mm spacers would it In my opinion, NO!!!!!!!! I don't really like spacers at all, especially on an older car like a Z. The wheel is basically held onto the hub by the force of the nut being wound onto the stud. The nuts are also used to centre and locate the wheel to the hub therefore taking the force of the wheel in all directions. On modern cars there is a lip on the hub that the wheel sits on to locate it to the hub and prevent movement, and the nuts just hold the wheel in place only applying force along the axis of the stud. Spacers on an old school car will mean the wheel nut has to do extra work, plus to fit any spacers you also need to get longer wheel studs. The longest production studs will work on spacers upto about 5mm, but for 51mm spacers you would need special wheel studs made up to give you an extra 50mm of length for the bolts. The only way around this would be to get the spacer/adaptors that are bolted to the hub and have 4 more studs for the wheel to bolt onto. Agian, in my opinion fraught with danger, let alone the legal and insurance problems with using spacers on the road. I would be looking harder for the right wheels, or go to a reputable wheel manufacturer and get some made. There are planty of people who make two and three piece wheels that can be done in the sizes and offsets you want. Simmons are agood example. Matt Quote
Toecutter Posted June 30, 2006 Posted June 30, 2006 I had some bolt on adapters made by a US Co that cost about AUD$330.00 delivered. They were approx 1.75inch thick and made so that you could fit all the honda FWD wheels to the Z. I was concerned about all the points mentioned above but I never had any issues. I think alot of 911 that get flared out use them. However I don't think they are legal in Victoria. If your going for the flared look best to get custom wheels seeing the dish looks so good. Some pics below of the wheels mounted with adapters. Quote

Where they the type that bolted onto the existing wheel studs and then had a second set to bolt the wheels to? Quote
Toecutter Posted June 30, 2006 Posted June 30, 2006 Yer thats right they bolted on to the hub and then there are a second set of studs to fix the wheel to. You can order these bolt on adapters that convert to any stud pattern to what ever PCD you want. A lot of the guys on HybridZ use them on L28ET's and V8s with no probs but it's really a piece of mind issue and I like the look of a bit of dish so if not in a rush I would recommend three piece custom wheels. Just save a few more dollars. Sulio Quote
