another of my weird ideas

a while ago I started a spreadsheet containing common part alternatives and relevant mods required. I quickly lost interest because nobody else was willing to contribute.

 

The ideas was the ability for a novice to look at a certain subject and see the options that were commonly available.

 

The idea really only approached the problem from a single angle (The zed cars). To take the idea one step further it would be great if it was multi dimentional. In other words one of us (a Zed owner) lists a part (Part A) with a part number and some details for a particular purpose eg to replace (Part B). Then someone else enters the same part number (Part A) but describes another application for a totally different car. If the second car has other parts listed (Part C) for the same application, then using a simple database query you could list all potentially similar parts.

 

In other words a novice could logon and ask for an alternative to Part B for a Zed. Not only could the database list Part A but would also list Part C. Obviously the person would need to validate Part C. But you can imagine all the extra options that would be listed. Its like creating a shortlist of parts to consider instead of checking every part in a wrecking yard.

 

Here is a theoretical example:

 

1.I enter Part number 1234 as an Air con compressor for a 280ZX

2.Sexual Sushi then enters Suzuki Vitara Air con compressor part 4321 as an alternative for a 280ZX (with a note saying no mods required)

3.Then "Mr Suzuki enthusiast" enters Toyota Rav 4 Air con compressor part 9876 as an alternative for the Vitara compressor (with a note saying no mods required).

 

4.Then if Gav searches for compressors for a 280zx the database will list

280zx part number 1234

Suzuki Vitara part number 4321 (with no mods)

Toyota Rav 4 part number 9876 (Assumed with no mods)

I think a good one to start with are alternators for a L series. I'll be doing alot of research into that area!

Hmmm would need some planning and thought, but I think it would be possible to do.

 

It would need to be created as a separate website though so not just Zcars owners could use it but anyone with any car.
