Upgrade 71 'Z with R31 rear disk setup

Hi folks. I'm looking at installing the R31 rear disk setup on my 71 Z.

There are a few sets appearing on eBay for relatively low money.

 

From reading previous posts it sounds like there is some minor modification work needed to get them fitted:

- Drill different mounting holes in the brackets and enlarge the centre hole

- a handbrake mount needs to be welded on

- remove the pressure valve in the master cylinder

 

Is that about all that is needed?

 

Would installing these with the standard front brakes upset the braking balance?

 

I'm looking at upgrading the front brakes with a Hoppers Stoppers kit (PBR calipers and Falcon disks) later on.

Hi Gyra,

You've pretty much got it right - but it's the CALIPER mounting holes in the factory bracket that (I believe) need to be welded up & redrilled lower down.

Ash (zr240) can confirm all of this...

 

You won't have any bias issue, but you may end up with a soft or longer brake pedal.

A 280ZX (15/16") MC is a good upgrade.

If you go to larger caliper on the FRONT, you may need to upgrade to a 1" MC. (PBR No: JB1419).

If you do run into bias issues then one of these knob style proportioning valves in the rear brake line should fix the problem:

Re -hashing an old thread.

 

I am about to embark on this excersise and am wondering if any of the 510/1600 brackets available in OZ would suit?

 

After a lot of searching on 1600 websites it appears that using the r31 brackets modified slightly e.g. different PCD and larger hole for axle works for them. These same mods seem to work for the s30 as well?

 

I can confirm the PCD of the backing plates is the same 240/1600 so the only question is offset?

 

Has anyone done this mod with 1600 brackets?
