ozy Posted July 7, 2009 Posted July 7, 2009 this was a question that i asked on another forum in ireland. i have a house in dublin city centre that has been largely restored now (backyard is ongoing) and during the build, my neighbour complained about noise etc. in my defence, i worked mainly during the hours of 9 to 5 monday to friday and the odd half day on saturday. this is legal as long as considerations to noise levels guidelines are adhered to. anyway, I used to live in west australia when i was a kid and always remembered how dead quiet the place went in the evening, neighbours partys ended way earlier than in ireland, or this may be just my memory of it. so my thoughts drift to, what are the laws regarding construction noise on a house renovation in oz? are they stricter than ours or just enforced more so? just curious, if this is too off topic, feel free to delete it Quote
menzcar Posted July 7, 2009 Posted July 7, 2009 Depends entirely on neighbours and suburb. I used to live in Melrose park where I could bang away on my house reno all night - literally, and did so during heatwave, worked all night, slept during day. Now that Ive moved to a beachside suburb - Somerton Park - you could hear a pin drop after 6pm. I cant work on my car here, so have had to rent a shed for $200 per week. If I moved a couple of hundred metres up the road I could have got away with a bit of noise after hours because that end of the street has a lot of tradies living there, but as for working late - not a chance. All it takes is one neighbour to complain and the cops will side with them and all noise must stop. If youve got oldies or those with a plum in the mouth living nearby you can kiss noise pollution goodby. I think when my car is finished Im going to have to push it down the street before starting it, because my neighbours are the complain about anything just because you can type. Hope they die soon. I run a landscaping business and had a neighbour on a job complain because we had a radio going. They called the cops. So we turned off the radio and set up a 9 inch grinder against a large chunk of scrap metal and let it rip. Boy it was loud, but the cops couldnt do anything about it. When we turned it off and put the radio back on there was no more complaining. Hope that helps. Cheers. Menzed Quote
ozy Posted July 7, 2009 Author Posted July 7, 2009 yeah, my street has a lot of curtain twitchers, but generally, theyll put up with the noise. the majority understand that the work needs to be done. but i had one neighbour that used to complain a lot, and id apologise, hed continue, then id recite the legal stuff and he still would complain. so i swore a bit and hes half left me alone since. funny thing, that same neighbour is having work done on his place now for the last 3 months and his guys work regularly till 7 and last night 8pm. funny, i dont mind, work has to be done. i guess it is neighborhood dependent alright. back in my parents place, yo coan go hammer and tongs all night with the radio blaring, but the next house isnt attached right next door... i think these are the guidelines here Under the Health and Safety at Work Act, the maximum permissible noise levels in an adjoining dwelling during Construction are: Days and times. / Average noise level per hour (dB) / Peak dB Mon-Fri (0700-1900) / 75 / 85 Saturday (0800-1630) / 70 / 80 Sundays and Bank Holidays / 60 / 65 (0800-1630) Quote
Scoota G Posted July 7, 2009 Posted July 7, 2009 Bloody cry baby neighbours, my sister lived next door to a couple and if she turned the music up even a fraction he was at the front door. I moved into her place for a while and when he tried it on me i chased him out of the yard and down the street. Tell your neighbours to get stuffed, you can make as much noise as you like between 7am to 7pm as long as it's work related no one can do a thing about it. Quote
ozy Posted July 7, 2009 Author Posted July 7, 2009 oh i did that. but i was just curious about the aussie laws on the matter. again, i remember my area in west australia being a very quiet spot Quote
RBZ 260 Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 lucky at my oldies place have good negihbours plus bribing them to do light work for free buys u trouble free neighbourhood. though i still try to be somewhat a good neighbour and dont start too early or work too late. there was one that was living down the street just moved in and complained about paint smell but my old man told him where to go. never had issues since and he still living there. sinc emy old man passed away ive taking on the work on cars. sometimes i can be very noisy and been painting cars almost at 10pm. no one cared. the place im livign surrounded by senior citizens. both cars are loud as and shacke the walls. one did bitch about it but told him he has good hearing for an old fart and that im impressed. he laughed and never mentioned it again. he did complan about lawn cutting and few specs of "my grass flew over his driveway" again i told him to relax and if it bothers him to clean it himself cause im not going to stand over his driveway and waiting for wind to blow a small leaf over his driveway so i can clean it for him. though the new place will be interesting. surrounded by 5 neighbours. 2 rentals one unoccupied and one old greek/italian couple = pain..... so far no one complained about the noise but even if they do once they prove im being noisy after certain times on a dB meter than they can complain. otherwise stay out of my way. and that will go for the boys/girls in blue too. go catch some crooks and stop wasting time about few hammer noises. Zeddophile Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 Don't start me on neighbours, the ones at my old place are the reason I have no Zed anymore. Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted July 8, 2009 Moderators Posted July 8, 2009 I'm lucky the redneck neighbours I had next door were only renting; the Chamapgne was flowing the day we saw a fleet of Budget trucks hauling their $hit away! I still remember a Friday/Saturday "thing" they had...from 3pm that Friday till 10ish Saturday morning...non stop drunken karaoke..and I was supposed to work that Saturday too... Quote
