I took my z out for a test yesterday as I need to get a rwc and wanted to make sure everthing worked as it hasn't been driven in ten years, anyway at the start it was chugging up some hills like it wasn't getting fuel then as i got near home the engine would just die. I tried to restart it but it would kick over straight away and die half a second later, 15 mins later I got it to start by reving the crap out of it and it was a first gear run home for the last 400 meters (i had to keep the revs up or it wuld die) I can start it in my garage now and it runs fine. It has a mechanical fuel pump and it had an old one in a box when I bought it so not sure if thats the issue or not?

sounds exactly like problems i had when i got my Z. have you checked the fuel filter for rust/blockages?

if thats not it then its more then likely blocked up where the fuel take up is in the tank.

Did you have fuel left in it over the time it wasent driven? it could also be stale fuel blocking the lines as what happened to me.

Might be worthwhile checking the diaphragm in the fuel pump; might have crap or a hole in it. Even better might be a good idea to install an electric pump? Check its output under cranking speed... see how much it spurts out.

Might be a good idea to remove your tank and flush it with descaler, then run some liquid surface sealer in it afterwards, there will be dried fuel, rust flakes and dirt in it

Possibly some pending holes due to thin metal, the metal surface sealer will fix that up, purge your lines also with descaler, install a new pump, ( as noted the diaphram dries out and cracks / splits ) electric conversion would be the go........ :)

The fuel gauge was right on empty when I bought it so there shoudn't be much stale fuel in there but I will troubleshoot some of these ideas tommorow, I actually think it might be getting too much fuel though as it blows a lot of black smoke when i rev it and it smells very rich, I probably should of mentioned that in the first post :P

hey mossy, just remember that when the gauge on these things looks empty there's at least 15 lt still in the tank!

Checked the fuel pump and it seems to be working okay and checked the plugs and they are BLACK after only 5km, so something is delivering too much fuel,, possibly a carby problem.

Hmm, i think you should toublr shoot the easier things first before doing needless carb work. I think what others have mentioned about the fuel lines/tnak will be the go, as this is the same thing that happened to me when i put in an old shit fuel tank.

the black smoke and what not could possibly be from the crappy fuel thats going through :P

I've decided to book the car in with Daniel Moore in Burwood, probably best to leave this to the experts and I really need to put my spare time into the v8 zed.
