Yes, I know its a little optimistic.

After having these carbies for months I have finally done something with them.

After a few weeks of bolting bits on, then realising that I need more bits. Buying bits and bolting on a week later. Noticing that I need more bits.

etc etc

Anyway, tonight was the big night. Everything is on. 

Turn the key........battery is dead.

Charge her up for a few hours, turn the key..........turns over...............no start.

Took a carby off for a look.

Jets are gummed up.....Why didn't I just check when I first got them. 

What do people recommend to clean with?

I was thinking Shellite.

Or you could wander down to your local Auto Pro / Repco and buy some aerosol carby and throttle body cleaner for about $8 bucks

Yea that's the stuff i use too. The 5 star cheapo brand works just as well as the more expensive ones.

I borrowed an ultrasonic from my sister inlaw (she's a jeweller) to rebuild the carbies.

I was amazed as to how well it worked, I told her that I was going to keep it. She replied that if I gave her $700 I could keep it 

 

Friday night I sat up in the garage till 1:20am working on the first Carby, start to finish in one go gave me less chance of stuffing it up.

Note to self, do not turn on the air compressor after midnight in the future if you want to avoid being killed by wife.

Here are some pics of a rebuilt and non rebuilt carby. They don't look too bad, till you open it up.

Here's the setup that I was using.

I also took notes on jet sizes to make sure that they are matched. Also cleaned up spare jets that came with them.

From memory I have - (will update later when I checkwhat I wrote down)

Main jet 200 & 180

Pilot jet 57.5

Air jet 140 &

Pump nozzle 45 & 40

Bleed pipe T

Any experts able to tell me how these will go in a stock L28 with extractors?

 

No wonder that it wouldn't run, all the insides were like they had tar in them. Jets and holes blocked.

Overall I'm pretty happy, now to check that they work.......

How did you get the insides so clean, even the corners are clean? Throttle body cleaner?

 

Or did you wack the whole thing into the ultrasonic

Simon........make sure you dismantle and clean the accelerator pump chambers upper and lower.. and check the diapragm pump (underneath the carbs) and ensure that the pump rods are equal length.

The carbs should pump fuel at a constant stream of at least 30cm out of the manifold when the throttle is opened fully .....ie...you should get 6 x streams of fuel squirting out mainfold when you open the throttle quickly

Yes, I have done this. Very important to do, I agree. Only one did it before I pulled them apart.

I haven't tested them yet though or set the pump rods.

In the manual it states to have a 6.5mm travel of pump lever. But all only have about 3mm.

What do yours have Alan?

Mine have around 5-6 mm from memory.....so they have a good solid stream of fuel pi$$ out when you flaw the throttle.

 

You should be able to adjust as the pump rods should have multiple holes to move the lever further up to provide more throw
