mouse240z Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 Thinking of shaving my P90 head to up the compression ratio to 10:1 on my future L28 rebuild. Can I bypass the need for shimming up the cam towers, if I just install a adjustable cam sprocket? Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted February 17, 2009 Moderators Posted February 17, 2009 I think you will be pushing the limits of the cam chain tensioner there...It would be good to get the shims.. Quote
Zedback Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 I've heard that Kameari make a timing chain tensioner replacement that removes the need to shim the towers. A bloke in the Qld Z Car Club was telling me about them. If I remember who it was I'll let you know. [edit] do a search on "Kameari" and a few threads pop up where it's already been discussed Quote
mouse240z Posted February 19, 2009 Author Posted February 19, 2009 Thanks for your info, Kameari tensioners look to be the right thing for the job. Cheers Quote
Scoota G Posted February 19, 2009 Posted February 19, 2009 Is this the type that you Guyz are talking about? http://www.kameariusa.com/L6_Twin_Idler_Gear.php Quote
xa1973 Posted February 22, 2009 Posted February 22, 2009 Yep Thats the ticket, the same as mine Theres always something out there, that someone knows about to make life easier at the end of the day, especially with cars Cheers Quote
mouse240z Posted February 22, 2009 Author Posted February 22, 2009 Hi xa 1973. How would you rate the timing chain mod, did you install it because you had shaved the head on your car? Cheers Kev Quote
xa1973 Posted February 22, 2009 Posted February 22, 2009 Hey Kev Yes and Yes, but I only shaved my surfaces by 3 thou as a clean up measure for piece of mind, you will need to determine how much you have or are going to shave and check your tolerances, if it is too great out of OEM specs you will either still need to shim or get a better head and start again I bought and installed this unit as a development excercise for myself to rate a pumped L Series Block against a V8 conversion I am looking at I rate the unit very highly, all engines have a weak link somewhere in the chain, the timing gear is a weak link in the L Series engines The OEM stretch far too much, are time consuming and a real pain in the keester to change out, particularly if your running FI and fall out of the tree when pushed hard if your block is modified A real s--t also if you lose the tensioner into the sump!!!!! These units are double row, well manufactured and made tough to run hard and install with out that C--P spring loaded tensioner, they are set and forget units They are expensive, I bought mine when the AUS dollar was good so I could justify the cost ( to myself anyway ) but if your only using your joy as a sometime daily runner the OEM will suit you Cheers Jeff Quote
