Hey guys  :)

You've probably answered this one ten million and two times... but..

I'm thinking of a chev or Holden V8 into 280zx conversion and before consulting an engineer would like to ask a few questions:

*Will the RTA allow it.. I've heard there are figures pertaining to power/weight or capacity/weight that need to be observed/retained but I'm unsure where to find this info or if it indeed applies to cars in NSW.

*Has anyone done it? A few hours spent on the forums and google didn't net much in the way of information....

*Will the kits supplied by the CAstlemaine Rod Shop for the 240/260 fit up to the 280 or are they different (I have emailed but they are busy)?

*According to the jagsthatrun website.. weight and balance can be well.. 'balanced' by removing/substituting engine accessories and you can theoretically end up with close to the same weight as when you began with your L28E/jatco combination. Do you guys think that's plausible or busted?

* Obviously being a non-pollution '81 model it would have to be run on LPG to pass engineering...?

Thanks for any help... if nothing at least I've revived the V8 engine swaps thread!

...... :-X or do I start ducking for cover!!!

Hey guys  :)

You've probably answered this one ten million and two times... but..

I'm thinking of a chev or Holden V8 into 280zx conversion and before consulting an engineer would like to ask a few questions: (SBC, BBC, LSX?)

*Will the RTA allow it.. I've heard there are figures pertaining to power/weight or capacity/weight that need to be observed/retained but I'm unsure where to find this info or if it indeed applies to cars in NSW. (Yes, they will allow it. They will and must allow anything that is within these regulations http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roads/vehicle_regulation/bulletin/pdf/NCOP3_Section_LA_Engines_3Feb2006.pdf Note this code has still not been adopted in NSW but is expected to shortly. These regs are more liberal than the existing NSW regs)

*Has anyone done it? A few hours spent on the forums and google didn't net much in the way of information.... (A chap in Sydney has a Holden 5.0ltr in a 280ZX - the red car in the header image on this site http://www.zcarclub.com.au/gallery.html If you look through the site you may find more. His whole setup, e.g.trailer and minibike, is a bit over-the-top for me but he has done it well quality wise)

*Will the kits supplied by the CAstlemaine Rod Shop for the 240/260 fit up to the 280 or are they different (I have emailed but they are busy)? (No - S30 and S31 models are different. I don't think there are any off-the-shelf mounting kit either here or the US, but I could be wrong. Also look up Johns Cars Inc for Datsun V8 info http://www.johnscars.com/zcar/zcar.html)

*According to the jagsthatrun website.. weight and balance can be well.. 'balanced' by removing/substituting engine accessories and you can theoretically end up with close to the same weight as when you began with your L28E/jatco combination. Do you guys think that's plausible or busted? (In a 240Z an LSX/T56 increases weight by 15kg and because the engine is set back it all on the rear wheels)

* Obviously being a non-pollution '81 model it would have to be run on LPG to pass engineering...? (Ask an engineer but I think you cannot go backwards - so you couldn't have an engine earlier than '81, and, if you go forward you must keep the equipment fitted to that engine, e.g If you fit a 2005 engine then you need to use all the attachments that came with that engine. )

Thanks for any help... if nothing at least I've revived the V8 engine swaps thread!

CHECK WITH AN ENGINEER (or the RTA) ON ALL THAT I HAVE STATED - IT'S JUST WHAT I THINK IS THE CASE AND I COULD BE WRONG

Hello Mate

Try looking at www.jagsthatrun.com/pages/parts_datzx_mountinginstructions.html

They have a complete breakdown including step by step with pictures and the parts and part numbers for a chev conversion into 79 to 82 zx's, its all there!!!!!!

There are two companys that supply the kits one is sensational the other is so so, or you can use the templates and make your own

Cheers

Well according to the code of practice a 280zx originally weighing 1300kg can be fitted with a 6500cc N/A engine under code LA2.... Chev diesel anyone?  ;)

Why not a Viper V10!

Oh, course you realise that with a bigger engine you will need a rearend to cope with the power and torque. Oh, and brakes to pull it up. Oh, and a master cylinder to handle the brake. Oh, and ...etc, etc.

You are probably right. I was wrongly thinking more about my own 240Z is raising those issues.

Most of my upgrades have been to 260Z/280ZX items, so considering you are starting with a 280ZX you should be right. Sorry to raise false alarms.
