nuclear_z Posted December 14, 2008 Posted December 14, 2008 Hi Guys, When fixing up my fuel pump wiring the other day I also noticed an interesting thing going on in the wheel well... I have TWO facet lift pumps feeding my surge tank, then the VL turbo pump going to the engine... Any ideas as to why I would have two lift pumps? Both are connected to the fuel hose, but only one is wired in... I can only imagine that the original owner thought that because the VL pump can do more Litres per hour than the facet (by itself) under full throttle the surge tank would drain... But, if thats the case, why has he disconnected it? It seems to be fine with just the one lift pump atm... Any thoughts? Quote
dalee Posted December 14, 2008 Posted December 14, 2008 Back up in case one dies But if the VL pump dies you are stuck..... Quote
nuclear_z Posted December 15, 2008 Author Posted December 15, 2008 Could be... But surely wouldnt you have a back up primary pump then as well??? I have a spare VL turbo pump and mount at home, but 4 pumps for a simple 2.8l turbo with under 200kw is major overkill... I might take the other facet pump out and put my new VL turbo pump in, and keep the others as spares... Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted December 15, 2008 Moderators Posted December 15, 2008 The only setups I've seen with 2 lift pumps are those 1000Hp RB26 mills. I think it may be just a backup pump in case of failure. Could be... But surely wouldnt you have a back up primary pump then as well??? In my setup all I have is a VL pump and a small facet lift pump but only on a standard RB25 without the 1000HP. Quote
RBZ 260 Posted December 15, 2008 Posted December 15, 2008 prob thought not enough flow. so added the second one but found out wasnt necessary. i got to revisit my fuel pump setup again. got Holley Red feeding a VL turbo pump (repco branded one) i keep thinking its running out of fuel (thats what it feels like) so wouldnt mind getting rid of the generic branded one and replacing with bosch unit or get someone to make me a surge tank with proper lid so i can install a internal walbro pump that i allready have. i had a surge tank made but had issues sealing the lid and plugs where the wiring goes. now just piggy backing from one pump to other no surge tank. got to keep it above 1/4 tank otherwise it dies. nuclear_z Posted December 15, 2008 Author Posted December 15, 2008 where abouts are you mounting the surge tank??? I have a good one at home, but would need to see if it would fit for u Quote
RBZ 260 Posted December 15, 2008 Posted December 15, 2008 fitting it same spot that original fuel pump resided under th ecar infront of the tank. cant be bigger than 2L. otherwise wont fit. also needs a lid with good seal that i can mount the internal fuel pump. ill get a pic of my old setup what i need but just need it to be better. Mine is a sealed tank so prob wouldnt be of any assistance... I'll take some photos asap and post for you of the system in the spare wheel well, and of the surge tank I have. Quote
