G'day all, I've got Narva H4 headlights on my 76 260z, the drivers side low beam is not working, but the high beam works on both headlights.

It used to happen now and then but now the drivers side is not working at all. Removed and inspected H4 globe, looks ok, replaced it and worked. But once bolted unit back on the car, retested and not working again  ??? Swapped bulbs back again still no good. Might pull a H4 out of my other car & try again.

Is there separate fuse for low & hi beam? Earth problem? Short?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

cheers, Mike

PS...anyone on the Sydney cruise last Weds remember if both my headlights working?

There are fuses for the left and right headlamp but neither high or low beam will work if the fuse is blown. Check the headlight bulb connector itself and/or the other headlight connector that sits in front of the radiator where the other connectors are for the indicators and front parker etc. They sometimes corrode. You might also have a break in the cable itself that works intermittently; like if someone plays and pulls on the cable... Just a guess!

Thanks Dimitri,(your RB is looking good btw) I will follow the cable further up and jiggle it (just a little bit)  ;D

I really want to avoid taking it to an auto electrician if I can, they kind of charge what they feel like...

it sound like a simple plug problem ... both high and low are fused but not left and right to my knowledge .. so when you put it together yo disrupt the connection... look at burnt or loose conections....

>:(  Fark, now BOTH low beams don't work. Driving home from the meet last night the passengers side was working. Went to move the car up the driveway tonight, now both sides not working but both high beams still work when selected. Check fuses all ok.

Never smelt any burning wires.   ???

I'd suspect your headlight switch. Remove the steering column trim and have a look at the wiring at the base of the headlight switch stalk. I've seen soldering joints there come off on their own when the joint gets hot if larger H4 globes are fitted.

Jeez we had a thread for this a few months back...

anyway same thing happened to me, ended up being the solder where the stalk meets the steering wheel ...exactly as  zedman said.

Thanks guys, I checked out that thread. Update....

Tried the lights again, now the passengers side low beam is back, but still no drivers side, both hi beams still work.

Inspected relay and connections look good:

Could there be something wrong with the actual relay?

Inspected fusible links. On the left one (closest to firewall) there is two wires. While headlights switched on lowbeams, only psngr side working- Unplug the top one (closest to engine) nothing happens. Does anyone know what this link is for?

Unplug the bottom one passngr low beam goes out. I swapped the wires top to bottom so I know there is nothing wrong with the connectors.

Unplug the single wire on the right link and the alarm chirps (probaly some sort of power supply)?

They are just the main power supply fusible links on the 260Z. The 240Z had a main fusible link coming off the battery cable on the starter motor. I don't think there is a relay for the low beam headlights because when larger wattage headlight globes are installed, the switch on the steering column melts..or gets real damn hot. If you can "borrow" another headlight switch and just temporarily swap them without bolting it in to test that will eliminate that.

i had a problem a little while back turned out to be the fuseable links, now i have highbeam and no Lowbeam. I shall be checking the switch as dimitri suggested.

I had very dim driving lights for a while and couldn't figure out why.............it seemed to be related with revs..........high rev and it would go dim

change alternator and it was fixed..........I guess mine turned out to be charge issues
