Aaron Neubauer Posted January 28, 2009 Author Posted January 28, 2009 Time for a long over due update. Not much has happened to the zed unfortunately. In my defence of zed neglect, apart from vast amount jobs that have needed engineering, the missus and I bought our first house around October last year when the interest rates were high (which are now low ). It's a little gable in an older part of South Toowoomba thats heritage listed. The building approval came through for my shed aka "man room" (its only marginally smaller in floor area than the house ) so once that is built I can bring the zed in its entirety from the old place to the bigger shed. In the meantime the little B2000 ute I picked up for cash wasn't satisfying my need for horsepower so I bought this as a fill in until the zed is complete.... A few weeks ago I popped in to see Paul on the way to QR and picked up some L24 rods. I'm really sure which way I want to go with the engine. The way I see it is I have two options: go the RB20DET (refer older posts) or an L31. Considering we have people that have done these conversions is there any chance of sharing your experience? This car WILL see track use, I still have to keep up with or beat my work colleague's R33 GTR or will be shamed forever! Quote
RBZ 260 Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 Nice JDM S15 Silvia/200sx. Im in the hunt for one as well. Great cars. Though I want the specR GT Aus spec one.need to sell one or two cars first so i got room to fit it. hopefully within 6 months or so. as for what to do with the z l31 or rb. i can sure vouch fr the RB20DET. been runing in my car for about 2 years now.never had an issue with it. also put lot of cars to shame when u mash the pedal down. since u own a sr20det just keep in mind the RB20det is lot different it likes to be reved to make it move though i got a bigger turbo but realy nothing happens till 4200rpm than it screams to 7000 before starts dying off. while sr20det u will notice it pulls hard from 3000rpm till about 6000. also not to mention the rb20det will return around 10L /100km on avarege. wonder what the stroker will return? i got an s14 and love the tourque but the z just seems to rev lot more freely and the fun doesnt stop till it hits the redline Quote
nuclear_z Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 For shizzle the RB20DET!!!!! let me know if your interested in parting with your spare RB... I just sold my r33 skyline, and it had a heap of juice for a road car (i know slightly bigger engine) but it was reliable and very comfortable with low engine speeds, simply a great engine... Quote
Aaron Neubauer Posted January 29, 2009 Author Posted January 29, 2009 For shizzle the RB20DET!!!!! I just sold my r33 skyline, and it had a heap of juice for a road car I had an R33 but sold it just before I bought the house, good car and I should never have got rid of it but thats life for you. Check the link....same number plates....nothing suss...haha! http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php/topic,2510.msg19361.html#msg19361 I forgot to mention I also have an R33 RB25DET VCT head sitting with all the Rb20 stuff. After checking NCOP section LA and a 2+2 weighs 1190kg approx, that means a total forced induction capacity of 1190 x 3.0 = 3570cc so I could very well fit a RB30DET in...... What to do, what to do...... Quote
xa1973 Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 Always a joy to see old become new again, why not put a chev in it and be done!! Quote

Aaron Neubauer Posted February 5, 2009 Author Posted February 5, 2009 Well I have decided against an RB30DET at this time in my life, I have a girlfriend of 5 years to marry sometime (still time to back out, I haven't proposed yet!!) and an extension to the house to do, the list goes on! Sigh! I did some maths on the parts I have and came up with this engine combo: F54 block LD28 crank L24 rods N42 head GTR +1.00 pistons (87.00mm) (30.3 pin height) 1mm head gasket to suit overbore (used 89mm bore for calcs) Swept cyl. capacity = (8.7^2*Pi/4*8.3) = 493.4cc Piston to deck = 207.87-83/2-133-30.3 = 3.07mm below deck Available compression capacity = swept capacity + 44.6cc (head) + 6.5 (HG) - 16.3 (piston dome) = 528.2cc Compressed capacity = 44.6 + 6.5 + 18.25 (piston to deck capacity) -16.3 = 53.05cc Gives a C/R = 528.2/53.05 = 9.9566:1 basically a bee's dick from 10:1 Dome protrusion above deck = 207.87-83/2-133-30.3-3.48 = 0.41mm above deck which *should* provide enough clearance for valve train components. This would keep the capacity under 3000cc to keep the car in the same category and other L series zeds at sprints. I think with a matched cam and head work to allow peak breathability, it would be quite a rocket engine. Anyone have any thoughts? Quote
Aaron Neubauer Posted July 22, 2009 Author Posted July 22, 2009 The bare rolling shell disappeared out of the storage shed last week destined to be chopped up for the electric sunroof. :'( If anyone needs 2+2 parts, PM me and I might be able to help. The car was bare except for the front and rear sub-frames (diff went with the car) so I have the rest of the stuff. Some examples of parts I have are brand new brake and clutch MC, CRS RB mounts and crossmember, bonnet with vents, hatch, back seats, doors and doorcards as well as heater unit and AC setup (pending).
