Blue Z Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 Hi Guys, Hoping that you can help and provide the gearbox ID number for this box? It was from a 280zx with 5 speed manual from about 1978. I am looking at one of the Kameari close ratio kits and just want to make sure I pick the right one for this gearbox. Thanks for your help, Blue Z Quote
C.A.R. Posted August 17, 2016 Posted August 17, 2016 Rough-cast early extension housing & the filler plug on the RHS suggests it's a 260Z gearbox, HOWEVER as it looks like it's been apart before (notice the red sealer between the sandwich plate) I can't confirm 100%.You'll need to pop the cases off, see which syncro rings it has & check the ratios. If you are going to build a gearbox with a Kameari gear-set, the ones available for the early 71B gearbox's still don't have the best ratios. Depending on what year your Z is(?), I suggest you fit a S13/S14 gearbox if your's is a early 240Z, or R31/R32 Skyline gearbox if you have a later 240 or 260Z with these ratios: - 1st: 2.427- 2nd: w1.677- 3rd: 1.258- 4th: 1.000- 5th: 0.759 HTH, L. Cozza Posted August 17, 2016 Posted August 17, 2016 Hey Lurch What's the difference between S13/S14 and R31/R32? Shifter location? Cheers Mick Quote
C.A.R. Posted August 18, 2016 Posted August 18, 2016 (edited) Hey Lurch What's the difference between S13/S14 and R31/R32? Shifter location? Cheers Mick Yes - the R31/R32 gearbox's are about 45mm shorter in the shifter location compared to the S13/S14 units. Mainshaft is also shorter by a similar amount. Also, fitting a 71C gearbox into a Zed does require modification to the gearbox crossmember. Basicly, if you have a early Z that has the vertical bolt holes in the transmission tunnel to mount the gearbox crossmember, you need to fit a S13/S14 gearbox. If you have a later Z with the Horizontial bolt holes in the gearbox tunnel to mount the transmission crossmember, you use a R31/R32 gearbox. Edited August 18, 2016 by Lurch ™ Quote
dat2kman Posted August 18, 2016 Posted August 18, 2016 You still need to modify the box crossmember, and tunnel tabs, in a later Z to fit both C type boxes. I have around 6 off, S13/S14 boxes that are very suitable for a Kameari conversion. The C boxes have thicker mainshaft, wider gears compared to older B boxes. You need to just source and mdify the L series bellhousing, to then fit the C type back end. Quote
Blue Z Posted August 18, 2016 Author Posted August 18, 2016 Hi Lurch and Dat2man, Thanks very much for the feedback, so based on this being 71B, I assume this will be the close ratio set for the gearbox? " L-Type: Only for FS5W71B Transmission type. HR31: Only vehicles before 8/87 Get this and all your JDM at RHDJapan!" http://www.rhdjapan.com/kameari-super-close-gear-set-l-type-fj20et-hr31-zenki.html Which would provide these ratios:- 1st: 2.624 - 2nd: 1.814- 3rd: 1.360- 4th: 1.000- 5th: 0.813~0.93 Quote
dat2kman Posted August 18, 2016 Posted August 18, 2016 That is dependant on your input drive/driven ratio, mst 71B's are 1.409, some are 1.53 Early 71A some had 1.409, others 1.25 Tye gears that Kameari supply, are all the same tooth count, for both B and C gearsets. To know just what you are going to end up with, you do need to pop the bell off, and do a tooth count, use liquid paper to put a white mark on a tooth, rotate by hand, count carefully. Quote
