Add Posted March 4, 2008 Posted March 4, 2008 Hiya, Spoke to a rod restoration person about fixing my hatch, due to the location of its cancer. Weirdly he said to dip it in molasses and then wash it out with fish oil before giving it to him. The molasses is supposed to help with neuturalising the rust, does anyone know anything about this idea/process? Thanks in Advance Add Quote

I'm pretty sure you have to make sure you neutralise the mixture once the part is removed. Probably more popular up here as molasses is a sugar product and they grow plenty of it. Quote
Zeddophile Posted March 5, 2008 Posted March 5, 2008 Definitely heard of using molasses to clean parts like rocker covers etc of grime and oil, the alloy/metal apparently comes up better than new. Does take quite a while though, and finding a tub big enough to put a whole hatch in and then buying the molasses to fill it could be fun. Sounds like your restoration bloke is a bit of an old timer, I'd be guessing he's forgotten much more about perfect panels than any of us will ever know. While the old ways often sound strange, panel beating and repairs done that way on cars made from real metal (Ie. Zeds and other classics) seem to always come up far better than taking the more modern approach. Quote

Add Posted March 5, 2008 Author Posted March 5, 2008 Yeah, hes been around for a while, was a pannel beater when my old man was my age. Mainly does all rods and muscle cars, pretty well known for his work. Well glad to hear that he wasnt playin a joke on me. 2-3 weeks . For the tub I was going to cheat and dig a hole and line with black plastic (stuff they use for gardening). I can get molasses from a produce place, about $30 for 25kg. So it sounds reasonably feasable, to the garden shed batman. After Im done might plant a small veg patch Quote
