aircobra Posted April 2, 2016 Posted April 2, 2016 got the wiring harness out today because i remember them being in poor shape l was in such a rush i did not bag them i'm hoping someone has done a full rewire and can help me bring this horror story to a positive ending first of all, the outer insulation is in bad shape and so the first question is 1. what sort of tape do i need and how many rolls to do the full job? there are plenty of generic 19mm pvc rolls on ebay like thishttp://www.ebay.com.au/itm/10-Rolls-19mm-x-20m-PVC-Electrical-Insulation-Tape-Black-Nitto-Lecky/301850789455?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20140106155344%26meid%3De2f7f71e6c6d42fb9f2d7e220a0321d0%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D301599729527 2. the front indicators sockets are shot - are they generic or z-specific https://www.flickr.com/photos/62957688@N08/26185433735/in/dateposted-public/ 3. some of the connectors have gone brittle. where to get replacements with the correct layouts? 4. does anyone have a ROUTING diagram, not a wiring diagram. i;m not clear as to how the harness snakes around the car. i remember that it comes out the firewall and then snakes along the fuel line, then thru the radiator support and then back into the engine bay thank you Quote
Moderators PB260Z Posted April 2, 2016 Moderators Posted April 2, 2016 (edited) Hi, Question 1. Only use a quality brand electrical tape, the ebay stuff generally won't last. Question 2. Z specific, but maybe you can replace both the male and female with a plug set from Jaycar ? Question 3. Not sure - from wrecks Question 4. Good Luck Cheers PB Edited April 2, 2016 by PB260Z Quote
GongZ Posted April 2, 2016 Posted April 2, 2016 (edited) Question 1 Search for "harness tape" on eBay Question 2 I have the same problem. I bought some of these from eBay, but I have not tried them yet; http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2-Pcs-BA15S-LED-Lamp-Turn-Light-2-Wire-Socket-for-Car-/151787148513?hash=item23573814e1:g:fDwAAOSwf-VWYPrY Question 3 I bought the CK-5N kit from 'Vintage Connections' in the states; http://vintageconnections.com/ It only suits some of the connectors, but I think these are the most difficult to find. Question 4 This might help a little. Edited April 2, 2016 by GongZ Quote

GongZ Posted April 2, 2016 Posted April 2, 2016 (edited) in regard to the blinkers, my one have 2 pins , not one as in this pic http://www.ebay.com....DwAAOSwf-VWYPrY OK - you have combined blinker and parking lights then (1970 - 1972 240Z). That means you need BA15D sockets like the items you found on eBay. BA15S = Single filament bulbs, BA15D = Double filament bulbs. My 240Z is a 9/73 model which has separate blinkers and parking lights, and therefore use single filament bulbs. Edited April 2, 2016 by GongZ Quote
aircobra Posted April 2, 2016 Author Posted April 2, 2016 but wait a minute, if this is for the front blinkers, why would they be double filaments? has the harness been swapped at some stage? Quote
GongZ Posted April 2, 2016 Posted April 2, 2016 but wait a minute, if this is for the front blinkers, why would they be double filaments? has the harness been swapped at some stage? Read my reply (post#9) again. What is the compliance plate date of your car? Quote
GongZ Posted April 2, 2016 Posted April 2, 2016 4x bosh 30amp relays that were wired into the circuit. presumably a home made version for the headlights but why are there 4? headlights and blinkers? My guess is that there are two for the headlights (i.e. one for low beam and one for high beam), one for the horn and the other is for the parking lights. Some people add a relay for the parking lights for a similar reason to the headlight relays. See this page again; http://datsun-240z-upgrades.net/product-info/ The factory wiring did include a horn relay. ...ebay lists 2 types of tapes the pvc version...and the cloth/felt type from what i can tell, it should be pvc? aircobra Posted April 3, 2016 Author Posted April 3, 2016 sorry, missed #9. plate is a '71 but the blinkers have orange lenses, so the parking lights are kinda wasted a RWC problem? Quote
GongZ Posted April 4, 2016 Posted April 4, 2016 ...but the blinkers have orange lenses, so the parking lights are kinda wasted a RWC problem? I think it might be a potential problem to have orange parking lights at the front. Have a read of this page; http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1707992 One of the replies there cites this Australian Design Rule about lights, but it seems to only apply to cars built in or after 1991. 'Vehicle Standard (Australian Design Rule 13/00 – Installation of Lighting and Light Signalling Devices on other than L-Group Vehicles) 2005' https://www.legislation.gov.au/Details/F2005L03991 The obvious (but not cheap) solution is to replace the lenses with clear versions, as it would have had when new. Technically, I can't have a similar set up on my car because cars built in or after 1973 must have orange/amber front blinkers (ADR 6 for Direction Turn Signal Laws). Quote
aircobra Posted April 26, 2016 Author Posted April 26, 2016 close, but the spacing for the tabs looks wrong http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/BAY15D-1157-LED-Car-Signal-Stop-Brake-Bulb-Lamp-Light-Socket-Holder-2-Pcs-/151786960723?tfrom=151787148513&tpos=top&ttype=price&talgo=undefined&rmvSB=true there should be 1 x small and 1x large tab - same as the tailight sockets Quote
Moderators PB260Z Posted April 26, 2016 Moderators Posted April 26, 2016 Hi That listing is for a BAY15d socket, the most commonly used for twin filament bulbs in cars. When it comes to tail, turn & brake lights BA15s and BAY15d are the standard ones for cars of the vintage of our Z's The image below shows what the standard BA fittings are, choose the one you need then search ebay using the BA code.
