Help With Sorting Out Wiring Harness(Es)

got the wiring harness out today because i remember them being in poor shape l was in such a rush i did not bag them

i'm hoping someone has done a full rewire and can help me bring this horror story to a positive ending

first of all, the outer insulation is in bad shape and so the first question is

1. what sort of tape do i need and how many rolls to do the full job? there are plenty of generic 19mm pvc rolls on ebay

2. the front indicators sockets are shot - are they generic or z-specific

3. some of the connectors have gone brittle. where to get  replacements with the correct layouts?

4. does anyone have a ROUTING diagram, not a wiring diagram. i;m not clear as to how the harness snakes around the car. i remember that it comes out the firewall and then snakes along the fuel line, then thru the radiator support and then back into the engine bay

Question 1. Only use a quality brand electrical tape, the ebay stuff generally won't last.

Question 2. Z specific, but maybe you can replace both the male and female with a plug set from Jaycar ?

Question 3. Not sure - from wrecks

I bought the CK-5N kit from 'Vintage Connections' in the states;

It only suits some of the connectors, but I think these are the most difficult to find.

OK - you have combined blinker and parking lights then (1970 - 1972 240Z). That means you need BA15D sockets like the items you found on eBay.

BA15S = Single filament bulbs, BA15D = Double filament bulbs.

My 240Z is a 9/73 model which has separate blinkers and parking lights, and therefore use single filament bulbs.

My guess is that there are two for the headlights (i.e. one for low beam and one for high beam), one for the horn and the other is for the parking lights.

 

Some people add a relay for the parking lights for a similar reason to the headlight relays.

I think it might be a potential problem to have orange parking lights at the front. Have a read of this page;

One of the replies there cites this Australian Design Rule about lights, but it seems to only apply to cars built in or after 1991.

The obvious (but not cheap) solution is to replace the lenses with clear versions, as it would have had when new.

 

Technically, I can't have a similar set up on my car because cars built in or after 1973 must have orange/amber front blinkers (ADR 6 for Direction Turn Signal Laws).

there should be 1 x small and 1x large tab - same as the tailight sockets

That listing is for a BAY15d socket, the most commonly used for twin filament bulbs in cars.

When it comes to tail, turn & brake lights BA15s and BAY15d are the standard ones for cars of the vintage of our Z's
