Jasonisa Posted August 22, 2015 Posted August 22, 2015 Wasn't sure where to put this post so someone let me know if its wrong. I have a 1980 280zx that i am putting an l28E+T setup in and i would like to know what is a cost effective HD clutch to use or will the standard item be able to handle a fair whack, car will be used for street and weekend drag racing fun (not serious competition) and running 10 to 12 psi maximum once its upgraded, Any advice much apreciated Cheers Quote
dat2kman Posted August 22, 2015 Posted August 22, 2015 The closest decent clutch supplier guy to you in the NT, would be Jim Berry, at RaceClutch in Brisbane. Next option after that would be some sort of aftermarket one, Exedy? But measure first the existing clutch plate diameter, before ordering, as it could be either 225 or 240mm diam. The US turbo cars ran the 240mm clutch plate. Quote
pauly_adams Posted August 23, 2015 Posted August 23, 2015 ditch your 225mm clutch it wont hold the power difference, get a 240mm flywheel then use a RB clutch, they are cheap and work well. I had a Exedy heavy heavy heavy duty button clutch in 225 mm and it exploded they cant handle the power Quote
Scando Posted August 23, 2015 Posted August 23, 2015 I ran this clutch: http://www.swmotorsport.com.au/product_info.php?cPath=96_99&products_id=350 With a heavy duty pressure plate that they don't seem to sell anymore. I ran up to 266rwkw through it and never had any slip and it was as easy to drive as grandma's shopping trolley. As dat2Kman said, go for the 240mm option if that's what you already have. Quote
Jasonisa Posted September 7, 2015 Author Posted September 7, 2015 Hi Guys if I was to get a 240mm Flywheel and an RB Clutch, do I have to change my starter motor or any associated parts, or is the standard designed to to go with the 240mm Flywheel, Also is the Nissan 240mm Flywheel Standard across the board or do I have to get a 240mm Flywheel suited specifically to the 280zx, I apologise for all the Noob sounding questions but when it comes to anything to do with the gearbox or clutch im still learning, Cheers in advance to any help given Quote
dat2kman Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 Same flywhhel dimensions. Only thing that changes is location of clutch cover dowels and bolt holes, along with clutch plate facing diameter. Quote
pauly_adams Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 Hi mate with a 240mm flywheel everything bolts strait up and works fine , you may need a different thrust bearing collet. As Rb clutch is sometimes a bit short in height . if you get stuck just pm me I can talk you through it . I also have a spare 240mm flywheel if you get stuck Quote
Six_Shooter Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 ditch your 225mm clutch it wont hold the power difference, get a 240mm flywheel then use a RB clutch, they are cheap and work well. I had a Exedy heavy heavy heavy duty button clutch in 225 mm and it exploded they cant handle the power I have to disagree with this, I think you just got a bad clutch, or maybe abused it. I ran a 225mm Centerforce Dual Friction behind my Turbo L28, running upwards of 20 PSIG (somewhere north of 325 HP), and it held up to nearly 8 years of hard abuse. It's only slipping now because I put it on a different flywheel behind a more powerful engine. Just because you had a poor experience with one 225mm clutch does not mean that all 225mm clutches will do the same. I have read about and talked to people that have also used good quality 225mm clutches without issue. I'm moving to a 240mm clutch because I can, and I really needed a flywheel re-drilled for the proper pattern anyway, because I don't think I got my current clutch mounted as concentric as it should have been. I also plan to make far more power than I ever planned to make with the L28... Quote
dat2kman Posted September 9, 2015 Posted September 9, 2015 Exedy units are pretty crap, Seen plenty with broken/cracked fingers, collapsed diaphragm springs, ripped off organic linings, etc. ( kinda like a "Fails" display!) Goung by the knowledge that clutch specialusts have expressed. But they are cheap, plentiful, and they have high market saturation. Either go discuss your requirements ( original poster f this thread) with a clutch specialust, or go talk to a shop that uses these things in extreme use. Ie Stew Wilkins Motorsport. Quote
Riceburner Posted September 9, 2015 Posted September 9, 2015 I'd agree with Jason, give SWM a try. They've got heaps of experience and have probably come across this setup before so they will know what's going to work best. I've run one of the SWM heavy duty organic clutches for 4-5yrs now and it's been great. The pedal pressure is quite light too. Quote
pauly_adams Posted September 13, 2015 Posted September 13, 2015 im not saying that all 225mm clutches are crap, but you will be paying over $1000 to get a decent one, a 240mm flywheel cost $150-200 then you can use many many more clutches and the cost is far less Quote
